Martin’s first clinches 2-1 victory over Mavericks; Skyhawks off to 4-0 start in RMAC play

Fort Lewis up to 12 points through first third of RMAC action

DURANGO, Colo. – Cameron Martin could not have picked a better moment to score his first collegiate goal and become the Skyhawks' eighth individual goal scorer as the freshman powered Fort Lewis to a 2-1 victory over Colorado Mesa University in the final minutes of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rematch Sunday on Dirks Field.

Fort Lewis improved to 7-2-2 and remains unbeaten in conference play with a 4-0 record and 12 points. The blue and gold found the edge against Colorado Mesa, who suffered only their second loss, falling to 4-2-5 this season with a 2-1-1 mark in RMAC action, after the two squads battled to a 1-1 non-conference draw back on Sept. 17.

Both teams took only six shots in the first half, and the deadlock remained well into the second half until Johan N'Ganzadi found space down the left side, drove into the penalty area, and drew an errant tackle to earn FLC a penalty kick in the 67th minute. Like clockwork, Simão Agostinho toed the line, waited for the whistle, and buried his seventh goal of the campaign and fourth penalty into the back-right corner.

Colorado Mesa responded with energy, and the Mavericks equalized moments later in the 74th minute. Richie Tabares Ochoa took possession down the near touchline and into the edge of the area, where he sent service central to Stefanos Christodoulakis, who rifled his first score of the year into the center of the net from 14 yards out.

As the pressure built, so too did opportunity, and in the 81st minute, N'Ganzadi played orchestrator once more, sending service forward from just inside midfield to Martin, who needed one touch before tucking in the game-winner just inside the far post and past the diving keeper.

The physical rematch saw both sides exchange blows throughout, and while the Mavericks gained an advantage with only seven fouls committed to the Skyhawks 13, the home side found the edge offensively, outshooting CMU 15-to-4, including 5-to-4 in shots on goal, and led 6-to-5 in corner kicks.
