Turnovers doom Skyhawks in home loss to Hardrockers

Fort Lewis outgains opponent again in third-straight loss

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College football team fell 30-16 to South Dakota Mines on Saturday afternoon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field, suffering its third consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference loss and first loss in Durango in 2026.

Fort Lewis (2-3, 1-3 RMAC) outgained its opponent for the second time in as many games, running up 302 yards of offense behind 287 yards passing on a 27-for-43 (62.8 percent) effort from fifth-year quarterback Sam Jones, who finished with three interceptions, a fumble, and two sacks. Michael Collins notched his first 100-yard receiving effort with a game-high 116 yards on 12 catches, and Solomon Latimer posted his second 100-yard effort in as many games and third of the campaign with seven catches for 114 yards. FLC was 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) on third down and 1-of-1 on fourth down.

South Dakota Mines (5-1, 3-1 RMAC) mustered up a season-low 242 yards of offense, with just 70 yards passing on a 6-for-9 (66.7 percent) performance from quarterback Gage Baker. Wesley Wright forced the Hardrockers' first offensive turnover of the season with an interception on the second drive of the day, and Samuel Ballas came up with a critical forced fumble later in the fourth quarter to give the Skyhawks the ball back with just under four minutes down one possession. SDM was 3-of-12 (25 percent) on third down and 1-of-2 on fourth down.

Kyler Drunasky ran up 11 of the Skyhawks' 15 net rushing yards on five carries. Jacob Brown ran for seven yards on three carries, including a three-yard scamper for his first collegiate touchdown and FLC's second rushing score of the season. Dawson Dunbar rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, accounting for over 45 percent of the Hardrockers' total offense.

Lucas Schmitten bounced back on special teams, knocking in all three field goal attempts through the uprights from marks of 18, 30, and 46 yards, while also converting a point-after attempt. Ethan Kercher flipped the field in quality fashion, making four punts for 163 yards (40.8 yards/punt), with two punts pinned inside the 20, including a 60-yard boot that put the Hardrockers on the 10-yard line in a one-possession game with 7:47 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Trenton Sullivan led all players with 12 tackles and one quarterback hurry, aided by two nine-tackle efforts from Samuel Ballas, who added a tackle for a seven-yard loss, and Porter Delnoce, who had half of a two-yard sack. Jonathan Stewart had the only other half sack for FLC. Jadon Lemmons, Lang Gappelberg, and Jarin Allen all had interceptions for SDM.
