No. 23 Mountain Lions down No. 14 Skyhawks, 2-1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The No. 14-ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team dropped the front half of its two-match top-25 road trip, 2-1, to No. 23 University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Thursday night at Mountain Lion Stadium.

Fort Lewis suffered its first loss to UCCS since Oct. 12, 2023, and fell to 7-3-2 overall and 4-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. UCCS rose to 7-1-5 and 2-1-2 in conference action.

The Mountain Lions jumped on the advantage just 97 seconds into the match when Lucas Taitt drove on service from Eduardo Macias down the far channel, found space at the corner of the box, and glanced a shot back across the turf and inside the far post.

Fort Lewis caught fire from then on, and the Skyhawks later outshot the Mountain Lions 22-to-11 overall, including eight-to-four on-goal, and fired off a season-high eight corner kicks to UCCS' two. One such corner proved critical in the 51st minute, when Francisco Pinto found Iver Høihjelle at the far post for a header back across and in for the equalizer. It was Pinto's fifth assist and Høihjelle's second goal of the season.

A defensive miscue proved catastrophic soon after in the 58th minute. The Skyhawks earned a free kick near midfield; a miscommunication on the touch sent the ball back into Fort Lewis' defensive third with nobody to claim it, leaving a wide-open lane for Cole Wearner to snag possession, drive into the area, and find enough space to tuck the game-winning goal inside the far post.

UCCS' Hugo Sjöberg was nearly perfect in goal, recording seven saves to keep his side ahead, despite Fort Lewis peppering the area with possession for nearly 54 minutes of the match. Lucas Martin earned two saves. FLC committed eight fouls and UCCS seven.
