Quartet of Skyhawks claim Top 25 finishes at SMSU Spring Invitational

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Backed by four individual Top 25 finishes by the Skyhawks, the Fort Lewis women's golf team carded a 309 (+21) to cap the tournament at 624 (+48) and vault three spots on the final day of action, claiming a third-place finish among 13 teams at the Southwest Minnesota State University Spring Invitational at Wigwam Golf Resort's Red Course.   
 
Fort Lewis shaved off six strokes from its round-one 315 (+27), jumping fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools Chadron State College, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Colorado Mesa University, who finished in fourth, fifth, and sixth place on scores of 628 (+52), 629 (+53), and 634 (+58), respectively. The Skyhawks trailed second-place Concordia University, St. Paul (616, +40) by eight strokes.
 
Western New Mexico University captured team medalist honors, posting rounds of 304 (+16) and 309 (+21) to finish at 613 (+37) overall. MSU Denver's Izabella Pesicka and Western New Mexico's Faith Lackey tied for individual medalist honors on a pair of sharp-shooting 148s (+4).  
 
Sophomore Peyton Gibby matched her career-best with a tie for sixth to lead all Skyhawks, firing off a 75 (+3) after a round-one 77 (+5) for a 152 total (+8). Gibby captured the fifth top 10 finish of her career and her first this season on the back of five birdies and 19 pars. Isabel Bustillos matched Gibby with a 75 (+3) in her second round, but a first-round 81 (+9) held Bustillos to a tie for 13th overall and her second top 25 finish of the season.  
 
Rounding out the Skyhawks' scoring contributors were Dimery Plewe, who improved to a 77 (+5) in round two with a pair of birdies and 10 pars to capture a tie for 18th on a 157 (+13) total, followed by Kathryn Moores and Sarah Grenemyer, who tied for 27th on identical scores of 161s (+17); However, Grenemyer competed unattached and could not contribute to the team score. Both Moores and Grenemyer carded two birdies in the final round.

Ellie White took a career-best tie for 24th in just her second collegiate tournament, turning in an 82 (+10) in her second round to cap the event at 160 (+16) overall. White made a 13-stroke improvement compared to her first collegiate showing last September. Annika Gutierrez dropped one stroke from round one, shooting an 82 (+10) in her second round en route to a 163 (+19) and a season-best tie for 32nd.
 
Looking Ahead
Fort Lewis women's golf will head for the West Coast and The Quail Golf Club over in Carmel, Calif., next Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 16-17, for the Patriot Invitational hosted by No. 2 nationally ranked Dallas Baptist University.
