SALT LAKE CITY – The Skyhawks women's lacrosse team (0-12, 0-10 RMAC) closed its season Sunday with a 20-3 loss to Westminster University (9-5, 7-3 RMAC).
Senior Marissa LaCivita led Fort Lewis for the second straight game with two goals. Junior Grace Butler added one goal, while seniors Valerie Garcia and Zoi Delgado each recorded an assist. Senior Sydney Tannaci collected four ground balls and caused two turnovers, and junior goalkeeper Olivia Tilbury finished with seven saves and three ground balls.
Westminster controlled the stat sheet, outshooting Fort Lewis 40-12, including a 20-6 edge in shots on goal. The Griffins also led in ground balls (32), draw controls (17), and converted five free-position opportunities.
After a scoreless opening three minutes, a turnover led to Westminster's first goal. The Griffins quickly extended their lead to 3-0 within 50 seconds, capitalizing on consecutive draw controls. Turnovers and fouls continued to hinder the Skyhawks, as Westminster closed the first quarter with a 7-0 advantage.
Westminster opened the second quarter with two goals in an 11-second span after a brief defensive stand. Fort Lewis generated a shot on goal at the 12:16 mark off a look from Velasco, but a save led to a quick clear and goal on the other end, pushing the lead to 10-0. LaCivita put the Skyhawks on the board late in the quarter with a free-position goal to make it 13-1, but the Griffins answered with 22 seconds remaining to take a 14-1 lead into halftime.
The Skyhawks struck first in the third quarter, as Delgado assisted Butler to cut the deficit to 14-2. LaCivita added another goal three minutes later off an assist from Garcia, but Westminster scored twice more to take a 16-3 lead into the final period.
Physical play defined the fourth quarter, with multiple early cards issued. Westminster added a woman-up goal at the seven-minute mark and scored again two minutes later. The Griffins netted the game's final goal with two minutes remaining to secure the 20-3 result.
