Skyhawks golf underway at 2026 RMAC Championships

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The 2026 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships began on Sunday afternoon at Boulder Creek Golf Club, and the Fort Lewis men's and women's golf teams found themselves in second place and tied for sixth place, respectively, following the first 18 holes of the tournament.
 
The men's team soared off the tee boxes in round one, combining for a 12-under-par 276 to sit in second place and edge third-place and No. 50-ranked Colorado School of Mines (277, -11) by one stroke, and trail tournament leaders No. 22 Colorado Mesa University, who carry a seven-stroke lead after shooting a 19-under 269. As for individuals, CMU's Leo Lavalle found himself leading the field by one stroke after a trio of eagles led to a 65 (-7).
 
Senior Jake Chesler and freshman Chase Rogers paced Fort Lewis, both sitting tied for sixth as individuals. The pair turned in cards of 68 (-4), with Rogers scoring just a single bogey and five birdies, while Chesler overcame a pair of bogeys with seven birdies, including four-straight from holes 14-17 to cap his round.
 
Traejan Andrews and Jordan Jennings went under par as well, as Andrews reeled off five birdies to offset a pair of bogeys and shoot a 69 (-3) to sit T-10, and Jennings overcame a trio of bogeys with a pair of birdies and an eagle on the par-five, 551-yard hole four to reside in T-19. Rounding out the men's squad were Ian Henderson in T-22 after an even par 72 with four birdies, and Benjamin Harding in T-40 on a 78 (+6) with four birdies as well.
 
On the women's side, Fort Lewis finds itself even with Chadron State College in T-6 after both squads shot a 15-over 305. The Skyhawks trail fifth-place Metropolitan State University of Denver (299, +11) by six strokes, the top-three by 11 strokes, and first-place and No. 28 Colorado State University Pueblo (287, -1) by 18 strokes. As for individuals, there is a five-way deadlock for first place between MSU Denver's Neige Dunn, CSUP's Thale Victoria Estensen and Lisa Ekberg, and Colorado Christian University's Makenna Brown and Raya Schulz at 70 (-2) overall.
 
Sophomore Peyton Gibby, who led Fort Lewis and took 10th at last year's conference championship, paced the group once again alongside junior Isabel Bustillos. The pair carded 74s (+2) to sit in T-12, and Gibby led Bustillos in birdies three-to-two. Senior Dimery Plewe rounds out the Skyhawks inside the top 25, sitting T-21 with a 77 (+5) and three birdies. In total, the Fort Lewis women put up the second-most birdies in the tournament with 14.
 
Ellie White, competing in just her seventh career tournament, scored three birdies across the afternoon to sit T-39 with an 80 (+8) on the scorecard. Annika Gutierrez found three birdies and Kathryn Moores a birdie of her own as the duo finished the day in T-43 with a pair of 82s (+10).

In an effort to avoid high winds in the late afternoon, tomorrow's second rounds have been moved up to an earlier start time. The women's championship will resume at 9 a.m. Mountain Standard Time, followed by the men's championship at 9:15 a.m.
