Smith and Hartwell represent Skyhawks at outdoor nationals

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College outdoor track teams have sent the distance duo of senior Hannah Hartwell and junior Elijah Smith to the 2026 NCAA DII National Championships in Emporia, Kansas.

Hosted inside Francis G. Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University, the three-day national championship meet begins Thursday, May 21, and concludes Saturday, May 23.

Smith opens things up in the men's 10,000m on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. Smith enters the race with a season-best and personal-best time of 29:40.48, which ranks 15th in the field. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) is well-represented with nine student-athletes toeing the line.

Hartwell follows with the women's 5000m on Saturday at 5:55 p.m. Hartwell's season-best and personal-best time of 16:19.09 places her 11th in the field ahead of race day. There are six from the RMAC racing in the 5k on Saturday.

All-American Criteria
The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has announced an updated All-America award structure for the 2026 outdoor season. Under the new format, First Team All-America honors will be awarded to the top eight finishers in each men's and women's event. Second Team All-America recognition will go to finishers 9-16 in individual events and finishers 9-12 in relay events, while Honorable Mention honors will be awarded to athletes finishing 17-22 in individual events.
