Agostinho’s brace earns Fort Lewis 2-1 victory over Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomore Simão Agostinho needed just 45 minutes to score a brace in his Skyhawks debut to power the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team (1-0) to a 2-1 non-conference win over Lubbock Christian University (0-1) amidst the sweltering heat down at the LCU Soccer & Track Facility.
 
Lubbock Christian, through its late life in the final six minutes of action, controlled possession for 59 percent of the match. The Chaparrals' steady attack fired off 11 shots against the Skyhawks nine, including eight alone in the second-half, but both teams found an even four shots on goal. In addition, Lubbock Christian also reeled off six corner kicks to Fort Lewis' one.
 
In the 28th minute, just moments after Agostinho subbed on for his debut in the 26th minute, Raul Baptista Filipe found himself directing traffic just outside of Lubbock Christians' penalty box. Once in space, Baptista Filipe cut through two defenders before sneaking a pass forward past another pair of Chaparrals, where Agostinho then leapt over a sliding tackle and punched a shot on his first touch just beneath the diving goalkeeper.
 
Agostinho remained on the hunt, finishing the match leading all players with four total shots and three shots on goal. And later in the 72nd minute, a gift presented itself. A nudge of a pass by the backline defender put Agostinho all alone with the keeper in the box; Agostinho made a quick move left and buried his second goal of the night into the empty net.
 
The Chaparrals would not go quietly into the night, forcing the Skyhawks into their own defensive half for much of the final minutes of the contest. In the 84th, an unfortunate hop off the turf allowed Lucas Carli to find the back of the net and pull LCU within one. Alex Lachevre earned the assist for his chipping service into the goal area.
 
Lucas Martin made a pivotal save in the 83rd minute, one of his three for the evening, and yet another in the 95th minute when he stood composed in a one-on-one situation to make the diving save to his right, not more than 12 yards out from the posts.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis won its season-opener for the third straight season, with all three victories coming over Lubbock Christian.
-The Skyhawks now lead the Chaparrals 4-1 overall and 2-0 down in Lubbock, Texas.
-Simão Agostinho, in just 45 minutes on the pitch, scored his first two goals and earned a brace in his Fort Lewis debut. Agostinho also led all players with four total shots and three shots on goal.
-Raul Baptista Filipe picked up his first assist of the season and the second of his career.
-Lucas Martin made three saves.
-Simão Agostinho and Anis Harrar each received a yellow card.
-Iver Høihjelle, Tor Dahlqvist, Anis Harrar, Johan N'Ganzadi, Noah Bouren, and Noam Maggartou each picked up starts in their debuts for the Skyhawks. Simão Agostinho, Cameron Martin, Zachary Lanman, and Alexandros Papakonstantinou all debuted as substitutes.
-Lucas Martin, Iver Høihjelle, Tor Dahlqvist, and Noam Maggartou all played the full 90 minutes.
