Schmitten lifts Skyhawks football to first 2-0 start since 1979

Fort Lewis outgained in second-straight victory

DURANGO, Colo. – For the first time since 2018, four quarters were not enough to decide a winner in a Fort Lewis College football game, and down to the final play on the second possession of the overtime period against New Mexico Highlands University, junior Lucas Schmitten stepped up and drilled the 37-yard field goal to walk it off and lift the Skyhawks to their first 2-0 start since 1979.
 
Fort Lewis began Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play 1-0 for the first time since 2019, when Fort Lewis also beat the Cowboys, while New Mexico Highlands suffered its first setback of the year and fell to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Schmitten remains perfect this year, having knocked through a pair of 23- and 42-yard field goals earlier in the contest to remain a perfect 5-for-5 on field goal attempts and point-after attempts in 2026.
 
Jacob Morris threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns on 24-of-45 (53.3 percent) passing, scrambling for a net zero yards after sacks from Tela Mulitalo and Lucas Lucero wiped out his 33 yards rushing. Junior Solomon Latimer had quite the career night, making seven catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns thanks to a pair of seven-yard and 46-yard scores. Kamrin Joyce-Fairley brought in another three catches for 69 yards and another touchdown.
 
The Skyhawks offense put up 374 yards of total offense behind Morris, rushing for another 108 yards as KhaVontae Paul ran for 71 yards on 13 carries, and Jacob Brown and Kyler Drunasky another 16 yards on two carries and 11 yards on five carries, respectively, in the two freshmen's first rushing attempts from scrimmage.
 
New Mexico Highlands stuck to its strong suit, rushing for 316 yards of its 457 yards of total offense behind a dominant 180-yard and three-touchdown performance from Ashton Bradford. Quarterback Kadyn Parr added 60 rushing yards on nine attempts and went 15-for-25 (60 percent) from the pocket for 141 yards and an interception by Drennan Dowell, his second in as many games to start the year. The Cowboys committed a crushing 17 penalties for 183 yards and six first downs to FLC.
 
Damon Mayberry led New Mexico Highlands and all players in the contest with 12 tackles, five solo and seven assisted, as well as half a tackle for three yards lost and a fumble recovery with a seven-yard return after Augustine Lopez punched out the loose ball. Kaleb Sells also brought down the lone interception for the Cowboys and made an 18-yard return. Trenton Sullivan paced the Fort Lewis defense once again, making a team-high nine tackles followed by eight tackles from Dowell and seven tackles from Jordan Thomas. MJ Dailey V finished with 1.5 sacks for one yard, while Dowell, Kingston Grigsby, and Samuel Ballas each had half a sack.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis football jumped out to its first 2-0 start to a season since 1979, and first 1-0 start to conference play since 2019.
-The Skyhawks picked up their second-straight win over New Mexico Highlands University at home on Ray Dennison Memorial Field, and now trail NMHU 34-21 all-time and 19-10 at home in Durango, Colo.
-FLC wins its first overtime game since suffering a 35-34 loss to South Dakota Mines in its last overtime appearance on Nov. 10, 2018.
-Lucas Schmitten remains a perfect 5-for-5 on field goal attempts and point-after attempts to begin the season. He is 2-for-2 from 20-29 yards and 1-for-1 from 37, 42, and 51 yards. In addition, he leads the RMAC with an average of 2.5 made field goals per game.
-Drennan Dowell boasts two of Fort Lewis' three interceptions, with a pick in back-to-back games, and is tied for the RMAC lead alongside South Dakota Mines' Charlie Johnson.
-Solomon Latimer has made nine catches for 160 yards and three touchdowns to begin the season. Latimer is fifth in the RMAC in receiving yards per game (80.0).
-Jacob Morris is tied for the fourth-most passing touchdowns in the RMAC and the second-most passing yards per game (216.5), as the Skyhawks have completed just two games against three from every team in the league.
-Ethan Kercher made seven punts for 321 yards and currently ranks second in the RMAC in 50+ yard punts (four) and second in average yards per punt (45.5).
-Trenton Sullivan leads the RMAC in tackles per game with 12.5. He is also tied for the seventh-most tackles for loss per game (1.25).
-Samuel Ballas is fifth in the RMAC in sacks per game with an average of 0.75.
-FLC has forced five turnovers, three interceptions, and two fumbles through the first two games of the year.
 
Up Next
Fort Lewis will head to Golden, Colorado, next Saturday, Sept. 19, to challenge Colorado School of Mines (0-2-1, 0-1 RMAC) at Alumni Field at Marv Kay Stadium in the first conference road test of the season. Kickoff between the Skyhawks and Orediggers is scheduled for 12 p.m.
