Men’s golf off to quality start; round one suspended due to darkness

SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Round one of the season-opening Travis Roy Memorial Invitational was suspended due to darkness on Sunday evening, pinning three Skyhawks inside the top 15 as the Fort Lewis men's golf team completed just 15-17 holes at The Powder Horn Golf Club.

Fort Lewis and Texas A&M International University were the only two programs unable to complete the first 18 holes. The two teams will head out at 8:30 a.m. to finish their final three holes, and then a shotgun start for round two will begin at 11 a.m. Round one stretched out to 7,111 yards across the Eagle and Mountain nine-hole runs, and featured a par of 72.

Sophomore Chase Rogers sits in prime position, as the Litchfield Park, Ariz., native carded four birdies to offset a few slip-ups and sit at even par with two holes left to play. Rogers is one stroke back from the top five and three strokes behind tournament leader and Colorado School of Mines Oredigger Davis Kusher, who turned in a three-under 69.

Fort Lewis sits in fifth place among the tournament's 12 teams, holding at eight strokes over par and five strokes back behind Mines and Westminster University at 291 (+3) apiece. Preseason No. 22-ranked Colorado Mesa University leads the field with a team score of 289 (+1).

Sophomore Dallin Stephens and freshman Mateo Berastegui trail closely behind Rogers, with the duo sitting T-14 through 15-16 holes at two-over par thus far. Recent transfer Talan Gover resides in T-31 at four-over, followed by Benjamin Harding in T-51 at seven-over, and Anderson Helmer in T-58 at eight-over. Berastegui matched Rogers with four birdies, followed by three birdies each from Gover and Harding, and two birdies from Stephens and Helmer.

Round Two
Fort Lewis will complete 18-21 holes tomorrow, the most of any program in the field alongside Texas A&M International, with the final 18 holes to be played on Tuesday afternoon.
