Men’s golf steady through two rounds in Wyoming

SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Freshman Mateo Berastegui will enter the third and final round of his first collegiate debut inside the top 15 and within striking distance as the Fort Lewis men's golf team sits in sixth place among 12 teams after two rounds at the Travis Roy Memorial Invitational.

Fort Lewis took on the Eagle and Stag nine-hole runs at The Powder Horn Golf Club, facing another par of 72 across 7,146 yards. Berastegui had no problem facing the new nine, as the Phoenix, Ariz., native carded a 73 (+1) thanks to four birdies and an eagle on the 564-yard par-five hole three, adding to his first-round 74 (+2) to stand at 147 (+3) in T-14. Berastegui is one stroke back from the top 10 and four back from the top five.

The Skyhawks added two strokes as a team overall, scoring a 299 (+11) after a first-round 297 (+9), sliding down to sixth overall and ten strokes behind fifth-place and No. 16-ranked West Texas A&M University's 586 (+10). No. 18 Colorado Christian University leads all teams with a comfortable 10-stroke lead as the only team under par. CCU sits at 569 (-7) thus far. The Cougars' own Jude Robbins leads the tournament with a five-shot lead of his own, turning in a 136 (-8) through 36 holes.

Sophomore Chase Rogers sits in T-19 and a pair of strokes behind Berastegui, managing just one birdie in today's round en route to a 77 (+5) and an overall score of 149 (+5). Junior Talan Gover is just another stroke behind in T-22 after shaving off two strokes from his first-round 76 (+4) by way of five birdies to turn in a 74 (+2) and await the final round at 150 (+6) overall.

Dallin Stephens caps the four Skyhawks contributing to the team's score, with the sophomore shooting a birdie-free 79 (+7), adding to his 75 (+3) from yesterday to sit at T-41 and 154 (+10) overall. Senior Benjamin Harding climbed up 10 spots on today's leaderboard, shooting a 75 (+3), a six-stroke improvement from his round one 81 (+9), to climb into T-50 with a 156 (+12). Freshman Anderson Helmer rounds out the team in T-57 at 157 (+13) with single-round scores of 80 (+8) and 77 (+5), respectively.

Fort Lewis will complete one final round tomorrow morning, Tuesday, Sept. 15.
