Final round stymies Skyhawks at Travis Roy Memorial Invite

SHERIDAN, Wyo. – The third and final round of the Travis Roy Memorial Invitational proved quite the challenge as the Fort Lewis men's golf team capped the tournament with a 317 (+29) en route to a 10^th-place finish at The Powder Horn Golf Club.

The Skyhawks surrendered 18 strokes between rounds two and three, totaling a 913 (+49) team score to just edge Augustana University's 914 (+50) and Westmont College's 918 (+54). FLC managed just nine birdies against 42 bogeys or worse in the final round.

No. 18-ranked Colorado Christian University won the event with a narrow four-stroke lead, finishing at an even par (864) as a team. However, it was No. 16 West Texas A&M University's Carlos Fernández Mortera who came back in the final round to claim individual medalist honors, shooting a final-round best 68 (-4) on the final day to finish with a 209 (-7) overall.

Sophomore Chase Rogers led the Skyhawks in the event and captured the only top-25 finish with a T-25 thanks to a third-round 77 (+5) and a tournament score of 226 (+10). True freshman Mateo Berastegui tripped up with an 81 (+9) in his final trip around the Mountain and Stag nine-hole runs, but his 10 birdies and lone eagle by a Skyhawk in the first two rounds notched him a T-31 at 228 (+12).

Junior Talan Gover led all Skyhawks with 11 birdies overall, firing rounds of 76 (+4), 74 (+2), and 79 (+7) to capture T-35 with a 229 (+13). Dallin Stephens and Benjamin Harding each took T-56 behind Gover, both carding a 246 (+20) for the tournament. Anderson Helmer rounds out the group, taking T-59 with a total of 248 (+22).

Fort Lewis will host the San Juan Intercollegiate for a second straight year alongside No. 22 Colorado Mesa University next Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 21-22, up at The Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose, Colo.
