Men’s soccer to face Mavericks on the road, host No. 21 ThunderWolves

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis men's soccer (3-1-1) will wrap up the final week of non-conference play as the Skyhawks travel to face Colorado Mesa University (1-1-3) in Grand Junction on Thursday night before returning home to host No. 21-ranked Colorado State University Pueblo (4-0-0) on Sunday afternoon at Dirks Field.

First Setback
The Skyhawks are off to a 3-1-1 start in 2026 and are coming off back-to-back tests, including a 1-1 draw against then No. 14-ranked Fort Hays State University (2-1-2) and a 1-0 loss at the hands of Northwest Nazarene University (2-1-3) on a late penalty kick goal. In its three prior wins, Fort Lewis outscored its opponents 12-2 overall while recording one clean sheet in a 7-0 rout of West Texas A&M University (2-3).
 
Plenty of Weapons
Fort Lewis has plenty of scoring options offensively as seven different Skyhawks have found the back of the net this year, led by sophomore Simão Agostinho, who has scored five goals and one assist for a team-high 11 points. Juniors William Bretvik and Fabrizio Aguilera have added two goals each, and four other Skyhawks have each scored once. Another seven Skyhawks have made assists thus far, led by junior Raul Baptista Filipe and sophomore Francisco Pinto, who each have two assists and a goal through five matches.
 
The Skyhawks have also been selective and dangerous on offense, taking 59 total shots with 37 shots on-goal for a lethal 62.7 percent shots-on-goal percentage, which ranks first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and sixth nationally across NCAA Division II.
 
Facing the Herd
Colorado Mesa enters Thursday night's contest fresh off its first win of the season, 2-0, on the road over Northwest Nazarene. The Mavericks had previously tied three times and suffered a single 6- 1 loss to defending national champions Midwestern State University (4-0-2). Fort Lewis leads the all-time series 17-9-5, and 11-5-1 on the road in Grand Junction, Colo.; however, the Mavericks own the most recent victory, defeating FLC 4-1 last season.
 
CMU is averaging 1.40 goals on 17.0 shots per match and has allowed 2.00 goals on 10.6 shots per match. Out in front, five-foot-eight junior Richie Tabares Ochoa has been the most dangerous, scoring a team-high three goals on 14 shots and five shots on goal, including a penalty kick goal. Tabares Ochoa has also made one of five CMU assists. Edoardo Oliveri, a towering six-foot-two freshman, has also added two goals.
 
Senior Nathan Beck awaits between the posts, and the six-foot goalkeeper owns a 58.3 percent save percentage with 14 saves and 10 goals surrendered against 50 shots faced this season. Defenders Jonah Elstad and George Jones bolster Beck on the back line, with the pair having added one goal and one assist, respectively.
 
New Direction, Same ThunderWolves
CSU Pueblo is off to a perfect 4-0 start in 2026 under the tutelage of first-year head coach Thomás Pazo Tourinho. The ThunderWolves have outscored opponents 8-to-1 with three shutouts. Before Sunday's match, The Pack will host Colorado Christian University (1-1-4) on Thursday night in Pueblo, Colo.
 
Fort Lewis and CSU Pueblo have had their share of marquee matchups over the past few years, and while the Skyhawks dominate the all-time series 51-16-5, it's the ThunderWolves who have led in recent years, holding a 5-2-1 lead since 2023. Last time in Durango, CSUP captured its most dominant win in the series, 5-0.
 
Senior goalkeeper Esteban Gonzalez stands in goal for another year, and the six-foot talent from Belgium has made five saves and allowed one goal on 24 shots. Offensively, just four ThudnerWolves have scored thus far, led by sophomore defender Jamal Bynum, who leads the squad with three goals. Fifth-year Nick Cenek and sophomore Pedro Martinez Castro have two goals each, and sophomore Juan Pablo Orozco Soto has just one goal thus far.
 
Race to the RMAC Title
The hunt for the 2026 RMAC Regular Season Title will begin next Friday, Sept. 25, as Fort Lewis heads out to the Front Range to challenge Colorado Christian at 11 a.m. at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood, Colo., before heading across town to face Metropolitan State University of Denver (2-1-2) at the Assembly Athletic Complex at 12 p.mn. on Sunday, Sept. 27.
