Fort Lewis begins conference play on Dirks, hosts #9 UCCS and Mines

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team remains unbeaten after its nonconference slate and heads into Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with its toughest tests of the season.

Schedule Change
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer match against No. 9 UCCS originally scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 17, has been moved to Friday, Sept. 18, at Dirks Field. The match will kickoff at noon.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis enters the week unbeaten at 3-0-2 after picking up a draw and a win in its final two nonconference matches. The Skyhawks battled Westmont College to a scoreless draw on Friday before returning to Dirks Field for a 2-0 win over Adams State on Sunday. The results extended Fort Lewis' shutout streak to three consecutive matches.

Sophomore goalkeeper Trinity Lujan played all 180 minutes between the posts and totaled six saves without allowing a goal. Against Westmont, Fort Lewis put five of its seven shots on goal while limiting the Warriors to three shots on frame in the scoreless draw.

The Skyhawks returned home Sunday and handed Adams State its first loss of the season behind goals from freshmen Kadyn Begay and Emma Gurule. Begay opened the scoring in the 31st minute with the first goal of her collegiate career off an assist from sophomore Addyson Carpentier. Gurule added insurance in the 59th minute, scoring her team-leading third goal of the season off an assist from senior Jenna Salazar. Fort Lewis outshot the Grizzlies 15-9, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The victory also marked the 200th career win for head coach Damian Clarke and extended the Skyhawks' home shutout streak to 12 consecutive matches dating back to Nov. 9, 2024.

Lujan named RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week
Following a pair of shutout performances, sophomore goalkeeper Trinity Lujan was named the RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week, announced by the league office Tuesday.

Lujan helped anchor a Fort Lewis defense that did not concede a goal across 180 minutes of action last week, guiding the Skyhawks to a scoreless draw against Westmont College before a 2-0 win over Adams State University.

The sophomore's work in goal has been a key piece of a Skyhawks defense that ranks among the best in the RMAC. Fort Lewis is allowing just 0.40 goals per match through five contests and has recorded three shutouts on the year. The shutout against Adams State also extended Fort Lewis' remarkable home shutout streak to 12 consecutive matches, a run that dates back to Nov. 9, 2024.

Scouting No. 9 UCCS
No. 9 UCCS enters the conference opener with a 4-1-1 overall record after navigating a challenging nonconference schedule. The Mountain Lions have earned wins over (RV) Point Loma, No. 18 Western Washington, St. Edward's and Chico State, with their lone loss coming in a 3-2 battle against then-No. 7 Dallas Baptist. UCCS enters the week unbeaten on the road at 2-0-1.

The Mountain Lions have displayed a balanced attack through six matches, scoring 14 goals while allowing six. UCCS is averaging 2.33 goals and 13.8 shots per match, placing 43 of its 83 attempts on goal for a .518 shots-on-goal percentage. The Mountain Lions have also produced 12 assists on their 14 goals.

UCCS is coming off back-to-back shutouts during its California road trip, playing Cal Poly Humboldt to a scoreless draw before earning a 2-0 win over Chico State. Against the Wildcats, Brooke Pavlich scored her fifth goal of the season before Taylynn Levi added her third. UCCS held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal, while freshman goalkeeper Lucy Kapranos secured her third shutout of the season.

Junior defender Malia Groshong anchors the back line and was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week following the two shutouts. Groshong played all 180 minutes as UCCS limited Cal Poly Humboldt to six shots and two on goal before holding Chico State to three shots on frame.

Scouting Colorado School of Mines
Colorado School of Mines enters RMAC play with a 4-1-1 overall record after closing out its nonconference schedule with a 1-1 draw against Western Washington. The Orediggers' lone loss came in the season opener against Rollins, 2-1, before rattling off four consecutive wins. Mines was 14-2-5 last season, won the RMAC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 17th consecutive season.

The Orediggers have shown plenty of offensive firepower early in the season, highlighted by a 5-0 win over Angelo State and a 4-3 comeback victory over Chico State. Against the Wildcats, Mines scored three times over the final 11 minutes, with Caelan DeBolt providing the game-winner in the 89th minute. Mines has scored at least three goals in four of its six matches this season.

Bella Campos has been a key piece of the Mines attack and was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week following the Orediggers' home wins over Angelo State and St. Mary's. Campos scored twice and added an assist in the 5-0 win over Angelo State, while Bella Torres, Allyson Townsend and Finley Ewald also found the back of the net. Torres joined Campos in earning conference recognition as the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Most recently, Mines battled Western Washington to a 1-1 draw in Bellingham. The Orediggers trailed following an own goal in the 78th minute before Townsend delivered the equalizer in the 87th. The result moved Mines to 4-1-1
heading into conference play.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis enters RMAC play unbeaten at 3-0-2 after wrapping up its nonconference slate with three consecutive shutouts. The Skyhawks have outscored opponents 6-2 through five matches while averaging 12.2 shots per game and putting 52.5 percent of their attempts on goal. Fort Lewis has yet to trail in the loss column with wins over Lubbock Christian, West Texas A&M and Adams State to go along with draws against St. Mary's and Westmont.

Freshman Emma Gurule has provided an immediate spark offensively, leading the Skyhawks with three goals on nine shots. Sophomore Addyson Carpentier follows with two goals and an assist for five points, while freshman Kadyn Begay scored her first collegiate goal in Sunday's 2-0 win over Adams State. Senior Jenna Salazar and freshman Maleia Dayao are tied for the team lead with two assists apiece.

Defensively, Fort Lewis has allowed just two goals through 450 minutes and is holding opponents to 0.40 goals per match. Sophomore goalkeeper Trinity Lujan has played every minute in goal, recording 19 saves, a .905 save percentage and three shutouts. Her efforts in consecutive clean sheets against Westmont and Adams State earned her RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week honors.

Fort Lewis has been particularly difficult to break down at Dirks Field. The Skyhawks' shutout of Adams State extended their home shutout streak to 12 consecutive matches dating back to Nov. 9, 2024. The victory also marked the 200th career win for head coach Damian Clarke. Fort Lewis will put that streak on the line when it opens RMAC play against UCCS on Friday at noon.
