Penalties insurmountable as Skyhawks drop non-conference finale to No. 21 ThunderWolves

Fort Lewis suffers fifth-straight loss to CSUP

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis men's soccer team fell to 3-2-2 overall and concluded its non-conference schedule Sunday afternoon at Dirks Field after suffering a 3-1 loss to No. 21-ranked Colorado State University Pueblo (6-0) on a pair of penalty kick goals.
 
Fort Lewis held the advantage across the board in shots 20-to-7, shots on-goal 4-to-8, corner kicks 7-to-1, and fouls 10-to-12, but found only one goal off the boot of William Bretvik in the 54th minute of action. Fabrizio Aguilera played a ball into the top edge of the penalty area where Francisco Pinto followed up with short service back across the box through two ThunderWolves, setting up Bretvik for the tap-in goal and his third of the campaign. Simão Agostinho's penalty chance in the 24th minute was saved low-left.  
 
CSU Pueblo, aided by a career outing between the posts by goalkeeper Esteban Gonzalez, who recorded a career-high seven saves, came out on top by way of defensive miscues by Fort Lewis. João Lutz buried the first penalty kick in the 6th minute, and Nick Cenek handled the game-winning penalty goal in the 55th minute. Juan Pablo Orozco Soto put the match on ice moments later in the 60th minute, taking a goal kick from Gonzalez off an untimely header attempt by the Skyhawks back line straight to goal, where his one-on-one challenge was deflected but still found the back of the net.
 
Agostinho led all players with four shots and three shots on-goal, followed by Raul Baptista Filipe with three shots, two of which went on target. Bretvik matched Agostinho and Fabrizio Agfuilera with four shots.
 
10 cautions were issued in the match, including CSU Pueblo's Brandon Sanchez, Logan Cozier, Jamal Bynum, Matty Parkes, Silvio Termini, and Jose Peris Gimeno, and Fort Lewis' Iver Høihjelle, Noam Maggartou, and Baptista Filipe.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis ends non-conference play 3-2-2 and will begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play on the road next week.
-The Skyhawks suffered their fifth-straight loss to the ThunderWolves, and fourth-straight loss or draw (0-3-1) on Dirks Field.
-FLC have allowed four penalties this season.
-Simão Agostinho is now 2-for-3 on penalty kicks this year. He also leads the roster with 25 shots and 15 shots on goal.
-William Bretvik scored his third goal of the season, adding to his one assist for 7 points through non-conference play.
-Lucas Martin, Iver Høihjelle, Raul Baptista Filipe, Anis Harrar, Francisco Pinto, William Bretvik, and Noam Maggartou played the full 90 minutes.

Fort Lewis will begin RMAC play on the road at Colorado Christian University (1-3-4, 0-0 RMAC) next Friday, Sept. 25, 11 a.m. The Skyhawks will then face Metropolitan State University of Denver (3-1-3, 0-0 RMAC) on Sunday, Sept. 27, at noon.
