Skyhawks head for the Front Range to begin RMAC play

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis College men's soccer (3-2-2) will begin its race through the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this weekend with two road trips to the Front Range: Colorado Christian University (1-3-4) on Friday and Metropolitan State University of Denver (3-1-3) on Sunday.

Closing Out Non-Conference Action
Last week, the Skyhawks wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule against a pair of familiar RMAC foes, first battling back to force a 1-1 draw on the road at Colorado Mesa University (2-1-4) in Grand Junction, behind a quality goal from Raul Baptista Filipe, who nutmegged his defender near the penalty line for the score. Later in the week, defensive miscues caged Fort Lewis in a 3-1 loss to previously No. 21-ranked Colorado State University Pueblo (6-0), who overcame an equalizing goal by William Bretvik with a pair of penalty kick goals.
 
Points Leaders
Sophomore Simão Agostinho paces Fort Lewis with five goals, including one game-winner, and one assist for 11 total points. The Loulé, Portugal, native continues to lead the RMAC in goals, shots (25) and shots on-goal (15). Midfielder William Bretvik has stepped up in his junior campaign, supplying another three goals and one assist for seven total points. Baptista Filipe has poured in six points by way of two goals and two assists, Fabrizio Aguilera another five points on two goals and one assist, and Francisco Pinto five points with one goal and three assists. Seven different Skyhawks have scored goals, and eight individuals have all made at least one assist.
 
Cougars on the Prowl
 Colorado Christian heads into Friday morning's matchup eager to get back on track, having lost back-to-back matches after four straight draws since its lone win of the season, 3-0 over West Texas A&M University (2-5-1) back on Sept. 1. CCU has not scored since a 2-2 draw with the University of Texas at Tyler back on Sept.12.
 
Leading the Cougars are sophomore forward Benjamin Brown and freshman forward Antonio Lugo, who have a team-high seven points each. Lugo has scored thrice this season and made one assist, while Brown has found the net twice in addition to a team-high three assists, matching the most assists by the rest of the roster combined. Five others have scored one goal each. Three different Cougars have stood between the posts this year, but it has been Beckett Pomeroy in each of the last two matches. The senior has surrendered three goals and made six saves against 18 shots faced for a 2.56 goals-against average and 66.7 percent save percentage.
 
Running Down the Roadrunners
MSU Denver suffered a 3-2 loss to Western Oregon University (3-2-3) in the season-opener, but has yet to be felled since, and most recently, tied 2-2 with No. 3-ranked University of Colorado Colorado Springs (5-0-3) on the Mountain Lions home pitch before defeating Westminster University (2-3-3) at home, 2-0.
 
The Roadrunners have outscored opponents 12-to-8 this year thanks to eight individual scorers. However, only two have scored twice or more: junior midfielder Ismael Reyes, who leads the team with four goals and one assist for nine points, and junior forward Jace Starling with two goals and one assist for five points. Graduate defender Charlie Lucero and junior midfielder Colin McKenna each have two assists. Junior Dominic Miller has handled protection of the net in all matches thus far, and carries a 1.14 goals against-average dn 70.4 percent save percentage with eight goals against and 19 saves against 71 shots faced. Miller has kept three clean sheets.
 
Looking Ahead
Next week, Fort Lewis will welcome Westminster for its RMAC home opener on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. under the lights of Dirks Field before a familiar Colorado Mesa comes to town for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Dirks Field.
