Fast start lifts Fort Lewis past (RV) MSU Denver, 2-1

Skyhawks start RMAC play 2-0 for the first time since 2015

DENVER, Colo. – Fort Lewis men's soccer concluded its trip to the Front Range on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Metropolitan State University of Denver at the Assembly Athletic Complex behind two early goals and a stellar defensive performance down the stretch while playing a man down.   
 
The Skyhawks improved to 5-2-2 overall and clinched a 2-0 start in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play after handing the Roadrunners, who received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, their first home loss of the year. MSU Denver fell to 4-2-3 overall and 1-1 against conference opponents.
 
Fort Lewis leaped out to an early lead in the fourth minute as Noam Maggartou launched service from his own backline through three Roadrunners, linking up with Raul Baptista Filipe, who needed one touch to control before rifling a volley into the back-left corner for his third goal of the season and fourth of his career.
 
A one-goal lead wasn't satisfactory, and as the offensive press continued, Baptista Filipe took a chance from 45 yards out on the far touchline, sending service into the penalty box where Francisco Pinto fronted his defender, took a touch off his chest, and chipped around the goalkeeper for his second goal of the campaign and eighth overall in the seventh minute. Baptista Filipe picked up his team-leading fourth assist this year.
 
MSU Denver slowly chipped away at possession, and in the 33rd minute, the Roadrunners managed to draw a foul inside the area to earn a penalty kick: the fifth attempt allowed by Fort Lewis this year. Colin McKenna buried MSUD's second penalty of the year for his first goal in 2026.
 
The Skyhawks defended well, holding the Roadrunners to just six shots overall and two shots on-goal, only one of which came from the field of play. Even more impressively, Fort Lewis did not concede a single shot through the final 10 minutes and 19 seconds of the match despite defending with 10 men after Alexandros Papakonstantinou was sent off with his second yellow card. FLC finished with eight shots and four shots on goal, and five corner kicks to MSU Denver's none.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis clinched its first 2-0 start to RMAC play since 2015.
-The Skyhawks moved to 38-26-7 all-time, 20-12-3 in Denver, Colo., and 2-0-3 over the Roadrunners in the last five matches.
-FLC have surrendered five penalty kicks in nine matches.
-The Skyhawks are unbeaten when playing a man down, having defeated MSU Denver today and tied with then No. 14-ranked Fort Hays State University (6-1-2, 4-0 GAC).
-Raul Baptista Filipe secured his third goal and fourth assist of the season. He leads the Skyhawks with four assists, tying the fourth-most in the RMAC, and ranks second on the squad with 10 points, the sixth-most in the league.
-Noam Maggartou earned his first collegiate assist and point.
-Francisco Pinto picked up his second goal of the year, adding to his three assists for seven points thus far.
-Anis Harrar, Francisco Pinto, and Noam Maggartou played the full 90 minutes. 
-Cautions were issued to MSU Denver's Lennon Green and Beckett Heynen, as well as Fort Lewis' Alexandros Papakonstantinou (x2), Fred Reiter, Frank Castro, Raul Baptista Filipe, and Iver Høihjelle.
