Dr. Joshua Coon

Joshua Coon enters his sixth season as head coach of the men's cross country and outdoor track programs in the 2022-23 academic year. 

In addition to his coaching duties, Coon is an adjunct professor in the department of Exercise Science at Fort Lewis College. 

The 2021-22 Season was marked with success as the team beat five D1 teams at UC Riverside and placed 12th of 26 teams at the DII South Central Region meet. 4 Skyhawk Harriers entered the all-time top 25 time list at that race. The team continued to be USTFCCCA All-Academic again. In year 3 of Track, the spring saw many successes with 10 men qualifying for the ultra-competitive RMAC Track & Field Championships and rewriting the top 10 lists for the school. 

The 2020 pandemic affected season was still a success for the Skyhawk harriers. The men finished 7th at the RMAC Championships and then received the only at-large bid to the DII National Invite, the substitute for NCAA Nationals. There, in a pandemic reduced field they finished 4th of 11 beating multiple nationally ranked teams with Steven Nez (32:19) and John Ngaruiya (32:36) leading the way with the #8 and #9 top 10 All-time FLC times. The team was USTFCCCA All Academic again (over 3.0 GPA). The spring track season saw 9 men qualify for the RMAC Outdoor Championships. Steven Nez was the school’s first NCAA Championships provisional qualifier as he ran a 30:35 10k at the Silver State Classic.

2019-20 was marked by Josh moving over the men’s team only as Brett Sublett assumed head coaching duties for the Women. In a rebuilding year with a great recruiting class and nearly all freshman and sophomores, the men still finished 13th of 27 at the NCAA South Central Regional. At UC Riverside invite, the team beat 5 division 1 teams on their way to a 13th/ 26 place finish. The team was USTFCCCA All Academic again (over 3.0 GPA).

2018-19 XC season saw the team finish 10th of 26 at the South Central Regional and Senior Hosava Kretzmann qualifying for the NCAA DII National Championship where he placed 47th overall. He ran a 31:04 10k at Denver’s Washington Park to finish 6th at the regional championships, running the second fastest 10k in school history. Becca Bramley finished 24 as she picked up her 3rd All-Region honors narrowly missing Nationals as the women finish 8th of 30 teams. Both teams were USTFCCCA All Academic Honorees with GPA’s above 3.0. After the successful fall campaign, the spring marked the beginning of the Men’s outdoor track team.

During the 2017-2018 year, he oversaw a successful XC campaign with the Men finishing with a 6th Place RMAC finish (of 15 teams) and nearly making the National meet (one spot away) with an 8th Place (of 28 teams) showing at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships. Hosava Kretzmann was All-Region. Kretzmann and Shawvan Levi both put their names on the All-time top 10 FLC 8k times with the 4th and 5th fastest times in school history. The Women finished with a 5th Place RMAC finish (of 15 teams) and were also close the national meet with a 6th place finish (of 27 teams) at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships. Becca Bramly was all region as well as Erin Renner, who Qualified for the NCAA National Championships where she finished 80th. Bramley and Renner put their names on the FLC All-time top-10 lists and became the first runners in school history to be All-Conference Athletes twice in one year – for both cross country and track. Additionally, The FLC XC women were USTFCCCA All-Academic team (with a team GPA of 3.4).

In the spring of 2018, Joshua oversaw the reorganization of the programs and the addition of Men’s Track to the FLC sport roster.  This change will give the men a greater competitive opportunity in the spring and increase program efficiency overall.

Prior to his work at FLC, Josh was the head Cross-Country coach at Colorado Christian University from 2012-2015. He coached the first All-American and Team USA Jr squad member in the school’s history, and the Women’s team was earned the RMAC’s Brechler award for the highest team GPA in the conference in 2013.  Making great strides, the men’s squad moved from the back of the conference to the middle.  Joshua also oversaw the spearheaded the addition of Men’s and Women’s track at the school.

At the beginning of his coaching career and between CCU and FLC, Josh worked with high school runners, leading Denver Christian high school to a 5th place State finish for the girls XC squad and had multiple state qualifiers in track. In 2015 at Skyview Academy he oversaw multiple state qualifiers including the 3200m State Champion, who would go on to represent Team USA at the World Junior Mountain Running Championships later that summer. 

Josh has a doctorate in  Sport and Performance Psychology and is currently conducting research regarding existential psychological well-being in. He has presented at the National Coaching Conference (2016)and the International Council for Coaching Excellence (2017). Previously he has in cardiovascular healthcare and Clinical Counseling. He was a varsity Cross-Country runner at Fort Lewis College where he graduated (2007).
