DENVER, Colo. – No. 11 Metropolitan State College (9-3-2 overall, 6-2-2 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) avenged last week's
3-2 overtime loss to Fort Lewis College (9-5-0, 8-2-0) by defeating the defending NCAA Division II champs 3-0 in men's soccer action today at Auraria Field.
It didn't take long for the Roadrunners to put the No. 25 Skyhawks on their heels. Scott Crawford rebounded Kevin Pocalyko's shot past FLC goalkeeper
Kamran Khyltash just 1:29 into the match. Crawford's second goal of the season was all the offense Metro State would need.
Steven Emory extended the lead to 2-0 when he received a ball played over the top of the FLC defenders from Andrew Mejia with 2:17 remaining in the first half and beat Khyltash. It was Emory's tenth marker of 2010.
Walter Bertini's fourth goal of the year put the game out of reach at 71:09. Emory intercepted a Fort Lewis pass and sent a through ball to Bertini.
Metro outshot FLC 16-12, 11-5 in shots on goal.
Issa Bissau made five saves for the Roadrunners, while Khyltash stopped eight Metro State shots. He was relieved late in the match by
Ryan Wirth, who faced no shots on goal in the final 11:51 of play.
The Skyhawks continue their Denver road trip when they face No. 16 Regis (10-1-2, 6-1-2) at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Rangers defeated CSU-Pueblo 4-1 today.
