DENVER — For the fourth straight game, the Fort Lewis volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East Division. Friday night, it was No. 23 Metro State (13-7 overall, 8-4 RMAC) that shredded the Skyhawks in straight sets, 25-22, 25-20, 25-11, at the Auraria Events Center.
“We were dominated by their hitters,” said ninth-year FLC head coach Shelly Aaland, whose troops fell to 9-11 overall, 5-7 in league games. “We couldn't adjust fast enough to their offense.”
The chief buzz-kill was Metro's Alysa Heath who recorded an unbelievable 21 kills and .741 attack percentage with just one error in 27 attempts. Lauren Quijano added 14 kills, while setter Vanessa Gemignani had 35 assists and 10 digs.
On the flip side, the Skyhawk skipper found bright spots in the loss. “Our offense looked good, it just wasn't enough.”
Ashley Wells led FLC with seven kills, while
Stephani Sonka added six kills and three blocks.
Jenna Kinzer had 11 digs.
The Roadrunners were the picture of efficiency, recording a .441 attack percentage with 54 kills and just nine errors.
The Skyhawks outblocked Metro State 6-3 and notched six aces to just two for the Roadrunners. Kinzer and Sonka each had two service aces.
Fort Lewis ends its swing through the East at 5 p.m. Saturday when it visits the Regis Fieldhouse to face the No. 17 Rangers.
The season's final three weekends find FLC back in the RMAC West Division as it tries to right its ship and make a run for the league playoffs.
