GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Nick Tomsick scored 27 points, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer to lift Fort Lewis (2-0 overall) to an 89-82 come-from-behind win over Dixie State (3-1) tonight in Brownson Arena in the Colorado Mesa Thanksgiving Classic.
Tomsick went 9-of-16 from the field and 7-of-13 from behind the arc to pace the Skyhawks.
Marcus Ayala added 15 points, while
Wes McKenzie and
Mike Matthews chipped in 11 and 10, respectively.
Matt Mazarei dished off eight assists.
“We got really good performances from everybody,” said 17th-year FLC head coach
Bob Hofman. “It was a very hard-fought, gutsy win. I'm very proud of our team.”
Fort Lewis led most of the game, but was held scoreless during a 6:18 stretch in crunch time as the Red Storm reeled off 12 straight points to turn a 63-57 deficit into a 69-63 advantage.
Torrey Udall sank a pair of free throws with 2:01 remaining to start FLC's rally. A Tomsick three-pointer cut the margin to 71-68 with 1:01 left on regulation and a jumper but
Jared Smith cut the deficit to 71-70 with 25 seconds left.
The Skyhawks were forced to foul with nine seconds left, sending McKay Massey to the charity stripe. Massey sank both free throws to stretch the lead to 73-70 and set up Tomsick's game-tying heroics. His bomb beat the buzzer as time expired, forcing overtime.
Fort Lewis owned the extra period. Matthews hit a three just 15 seconds in to give FLC a 76-73 lead that they'd never relinquish.
Zach Robbins led the Red Storm with 22 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. Steven Larson added 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while Massey finished with 15.
The Skyhawks face Northern New Mexico (3-10) at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Brownson Arena. Fort Lewis defeated the Eagles 83-52 last Thursday in Whalen Gymnasium.
