COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team (3-2 overall) swept Midwestern State (1-4) 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 this morning in the opening game of the Mountain Lion Invitational.
“We did a great job this morning starting off the tournament and weekend,” said ninth-year FLC head volleyball coach Shelly Aaland. “We had very good play. Our offense did very well with all of our hitters in the mix. We'll get through this preseason weekend working out all the kinks to get ready for RMAC play. We have a really young team with three freshmen on the court and it says great things about where we're going.”
Ashley Wells led the way with 11 kills (.261), while
Stephani Sonka (7 kills, .350) and
Kristin Stephan (7 kills, .357),
Alexa Moser (6 kills, .211), and
Ashley Ellis (6 kills, .364) all having strong games. As a team, Fort Lewis hit .289 as setter
Ciara Krening (34 assists) ran the offense to perfection.
Fort Lewis outblocked Midwestern State 6-0 (Ellis led the way with 4) and had 5 service aces.
Jenna Kinzer led FLC's defense with 12 digs, while Moser added 7.
The Mustangs were led by Shelbi Stewart's 11 kills.
The Skyhawks face their first Top 25 team of the season at 2 p.m. when they square off against Wayne State (Neb.) (3-1).
Tomorrow, FLC will face Franklin Pierce (3-2) at 9 a.m. and UC-Colorado Springs (2-3) at 2 p.m.
