Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – Taking on the second place team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings, the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks defeated Colorado Mesa University in five sets Tuesday night at Whalen Gymnasium.
Heading into tonight's match, the Mavericks (19-6 overall) were in a three way tie in the standings with Western New Mexico and Regis with an 11-4 record. The Skyhawks held on to their eighth place ranking in the conference to even their league record to 8-8 (8-16 overall).
Fort Lewis dropped the first set, 27-25, but evened the match after set two, 25-23. The Skyhawks took the match lead after set three, 25-20, before falling in set four, 25-16.
In set five, Colorado Mesa took a quick 5-1 lead. The Skyhawks responded with a 7-0 run.
Ashley Wells rattled off back-to-back kills followed by three consecutive attack errors by the Mavericks, a kill by
Stephani Sonka and another attack error that give FLC an 8-5 lead. An attack error by Fort Lewis closed the lead to 8-6, but Wells tallied two more kills to give FLC a 10-6 lead and force CMU to take their second timeout of the set. The Skyhawks finished the set with a 5-2 run.
Fort Lewis blocked 17 of the Mavericks attacks and forced them to hit .104 for the match. Seven of CMU's 39 attack errors came in the fifth set where they hit -.154 (three kills, seven errors, 26 attempts).
Ashley Wells recorded a double-double in the match with a match high 20 kills, 10 digs, four block assists and a .342 hitting percentage.
Mallory Dill added 12 kills and hit .269.
Heather Danny contributed 42 assists, three kills and six digs.
Madi Bickle posted a match high 10 blocks (three solo, seven assisted).
Three Mavericks recorded double digit kills, led by Melissa Hess with 17, and Casey Ball and Audrey Steinkirchner with 11 each. Jordyn Moody posted a match high 52 set assists.
The Skyhawks will play host to Western New Mexico University Saturday night at 7 p.m.
