Nick Tomsick each scored a game high 19 points Friday night to lead the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to their fourth straight win Friday night. The Skyhawks defeated New Mexico Highlands University, 82-69, in Las Vegas, N.M.
Herrera recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds. He made 3-of-5 field goals and 13-of-15 free throws. Tomsick sank 3-of-6 field goals (1-of-3 three-point field goals) and all 12 of his free throw attempts.
"The bench came up huge for us tonight," said Fort Lewis College associate head coach
Bob Pietrack. "Overall, out bench helped us magnificently. On the other end of the court, we've been really working on defense and it paid off for us tonight."
Wes McKenzie led the bench play as he contributed 17 points. McKenzie was near perfect from the floor, making 6-of-7 field goals and all four free throw attempts.
Fort Lewis out-rebounded the Cowboys by 10, 38-28. The Cowboys were only the third team this season (and the first NCAA opponent), to score less than 70 points against the Skyhawks.
FLC was solid from the floor, sinking 47.8 percent (22-of-46) and 88.9 percent from the charity stripe (32-of-36). The Skyhawks held the Cowboys to under 40 percent field goal shooting, and NMHU netted only 58.8 percent from the free throw line (10-of-17).
The Skyhawks will travel to Silver City, N.M. Saturday night. They will tip-off against the Mustangs at 7:30 p.m.
