Caitlyn Espinosa broke the school record for the longest shutout streak in a season. Espinosa led the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout at University of Colorado Colorado Springs Friday night.
With the win, FLC improves to 4-3-4 overall and 3-1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. UCCS drops to 5-6 overall and 4-4 in league matches.
Espinosa's shutout streak has now been extended to 618 minutes. She broke Christine Schmelzle's shutout record of 561:29 (Aug. 27, 2009-Sept. 18, 2009). The last time Fort Lewis was scored on was at Regis University on Sept. 19 in the 72
nd minute. Espinosa and the Skyhawks also recorded their sixth straight shutout of the season, tying the school record for most consecutive shutouts. FLC has seven shutouts in 11 games.
Alicia Sanchez and
Shannon Harpham each recorded their first goals of the season Friday night.
Keisha Green assisted Sanchez at 63:45. Sanchez put the ball in the back of the net from 25 yards out. Harpham scored her goal unassisted off a free kick from 35 yards out.
"We had good possession in the first half," said Fort Lewis College head women's soccer coach
Jimmy Hall. "We added the dangerous play in the second and half and deserved the rewards."
UCCS recorded 15 shots (five on goal) to the Skyhawks 11 shots (five on goal). Espinosa stopped all five Mountain Lions shots on goal to improve to 4-3-3 on the year.
Fort Lewis will return home Sunday to host New Mexico Highlands University at Dirks Field. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
