Alex Herrera recorded five blocks Friday night in a 70-57 win over St. Mary's University at the Sun Ute Community Center in Ignacio, Colo. in the Skyhawks season opening game.
Herrera recorded a block at 12:18 in the first half to tie Rich Hillyer's career block record of 208. With 1:10 left in the first half, Herrera added his second block of the game to become the sole career block leader at Fort Lewis College.
The Skyhawks held a 35-26 lead at halftime. FLC shot 44 percent from the floor and 45.5 percent from long range in the first half. They ended the game making 21-of-53 field goals for 39.6 percent and 21-of-30 free throws for 70 percent.
Herrera led all players with 23 points after sinking 9-of-12 field goals and 4-of-7 free throws. He also added 10 blocks and dished out a game high six assists.
Cade Kloster netted 14 points for the Skyhawks, six of which came from the free throw line and six more from long range.
Kofi Josephs came off the bench to add 11 points, two assists and three rebounds.
St. Mary's was led by Marvin Whitt with 13 points. JJ Bolton pulled down a game high 11 rebounds and chipped in seven points and three assists.
The Skyhawks held SMU to a 42.6 field goal shooting mark (20-of-47) and 57.5 percent from the charity stripe (15-of-26).
Fort Lewis will play host to Texas-Permian Basin Saturday night at 7 p.m.
