Skyhawks Fall in Fourth Quarter Against Eagles, 28-16

DURANGO, Colo. – November 15, 2014 – Fort Lewis College held a 16-14 lead over visiting Chadron State College Saturday afternoon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field, but 14 unanswered points by the Eagles led to a 28-16 loss for the Skyhawks.

Chadron State won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening coin toss. The Skyhawks forced the Eagles to punt on their opening drive. The Skyhawks started their drive on Chadron's State's 45-yard line and drove down to the Eagles 16 yard line before CSC picked the Skyhawks off on third-and-eight.

Fort Lewis again forced the Eagles to punt on their second drive, resulting the Skyhawks to start their second drive on the FLC eight yard line. Kipp Castanha gave the Skyhawk a 3-0 lead with 43 ticks left in the first quarter after making a 41-yard field goal. He added another three points at 11:44 in the second quarter after a 34-yard field goal went through the uprights. With time running out in the first half, Kaimon Ontiveros intercepted Jonn McLain's pass to end the half and a four-play, 11-yard drive.

Chadron State took their first lead of the game with 5:30 left in the first half after Danny O'Boyle caught a 45-yard pass from Jonn McLain. With just eight seconds left in the half, Castanha made his third straight field goal, this time from 35 yards out, giving the Skyhawks a 9-7 lead at halftime.

The Skyhawks took a 16-7 lead to start the second half after marching down the field 88 yards on 12 plays. Kaulana Waalani-Arroyo rushed in from one yard to score the Skyhawks first touchdown of the game. The Eagles cut the lead to two points, 16-14, after McLain threw a 19 yard pass to Kyle Vinich.

Heading into the fourth quarter and a Skyhawks two-point lead, Chadron State took their second lead of the game with 13:34 left in regulation. McLain found Vinich again for another touchdown, this time a 21-yard scoring pass. CSC's two-point conversion from McLain and O'Boyle was good as CSC took a 22-16 lead they would not relinquish. The Eagles found the end zone again with three minutes left in regulation to seal the game, 28-16.

Fort Lewis ran 91 plays for 404 yards, 295 of which came on the ground. Waalani-Arroyo led both teams with 143 rushing yards on 26 plays for one touchdown. Trevor Bonifasi completed 14-of-33 passes for one score and 109 yards.

McLain finished with 300 passing yards and three touchdowns after completing 24-of-32 passes. Vinich caught eight passes for 133 yards and two scores.

Amu Aukusitino led the Skyhawks defensive corps with 11 tackles (seven total). Ryan Ross added six tackles and a sack for a loss of nine yards.
