AUSTIN, Texas – November 15, 2014 – Twenty-seven turnovers and a 12-point deficit at halftime resulted in a 58-54 setback Saturday night for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team. The Skyhawks fell to St. Edward's University on the road, 58-54.
The loss moves the Skyhawks to 1-1 on the season.
"Obviously we played a tough game on the road against a really good team," said Fort Lewis College head women's basketball coach
Jason Flores. "The problem was that we dug ourselves too big of hole and you have to play absolutely perfect to come back from that. Our effort in the second half was completely different than the first half. It's frustrating because we didn't put two halves together. If we can bottle up that effort and intensity and good play that we had for a big stretch, then we have a good chance to learn from this."
Mary Brinton scored 17 points in only 18 minutes on the court. She also pulled down 11 rebounds and made 7-of-11 field goals.
Kaile Magazzeni added eight points, four blocked shots and three steals.
Ande Lampert came off the bench to chip in eight points.
Fort Lewis made 34.8 percent from the floor (23-66) but was held without a three-point field goal on seven attempts.
Mileka Laydrake and Lexi Fatheree combined for 42 of SEU's 58 points. Laydrake led all scorers with 22 points.
The Skyhawks will open their home season Thursday night against Northern New Mexico. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
