DURANGO, Colo. – December 20, 2014 – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball game against Colorado Mesa University featured 10 lead changes and the scored tied eight times, but the Mavericks finished the game making 1-of-2 free throws to hand the Skyhawks a 52-50 setback Saturday at Whalen Gymnasium.
The Skyhawks last lead of the game was with 8:27 left in regulation.
Mary Brinton made one free throw to tie the game at 41-41 and her second made free throw gave the Skyhawks a 42-41 lead. The Mavericks regained the lead one minute later and held the lead for the final seven and a half minutes. Fort Lewis trailed by one point, 51-50, with five seconds left in regulation but a missed free throw attempt by FLC and one of two free throws made by CMU sealed the win for the Mavs.
Brinton led the Skyhawks with 15 points after making 3-of-8 field goals and 9-of-10 free throws. She added five rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal.
Lynette Hepa came off the bench to record seven points, three steals and a career high nine rebounds.
Michelle Turner pulled down six rebounds and dished out a team high three assists.
The Mavs were led by Erin Reichle's 16 points and Leanndra Gilbert's 14 rebounds.
Fort Lewis out-rebounded CMU, 48-42. The Skyhawks notched 22 points in the pain compared to the Mavericks 18, and the Skyhawks bench out-scored CMU's, 26-18.
Both teams shot less than 30 percent from the floor. FLC netted 16-of-58 field goals for 27.6 percent, and CMU made 16-of-56 for 28.6 percent. The Skyhawks were held to only one made three-point field goal on 10 attempts.
The loss moves Fort Lewis to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Skyhawks will play host to Western State Colorado University Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
