DURANGO, Colo. – December 21, 2014 – After shooting only 16.7 percent in the first half (4-of-24) and trailing by 10 points (33-22) at the half, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team came out of halftime to shoot 57.1 percent (16-of-28) and earn a seven point win over Western State Colorado University Sunday afternoon at Whalen Gymnasium. With the win, the Skyhawks move to 5-4 on the year and 2-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountaineers fall to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in league games.
Trailing by 10 points at the half, Fort Lewis came out in the second half with a 19-8 run in the first six minutes. All four of their second half three-point field goals came in that six minute span.
Kate Bayes came off the bench to lead the Skyhawks offensively with 20 points and seven rebounds. Bayes, who made 5-of-10 field goals and 8-of-10 free throws, also led both teams with five steals.
Kylie Santos netted 3-of-7 field goals as part of her 12 points. She added three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Kaile Magazzeni blocked three shots and scored seven points, while
Mary Brinton added four rebounds and eight points.
The Skyhawks finished the game making 38.5 percent from the floor (20-of-52) and 7-of-16 from long range (43.8 percent). The Skyhawks forced WSCU to commit 21 turnovers. FLC scored 27 points off of the turnovers, and out-score the Mountaineers on fast break points (12-2), and from the bench (34-14).
Jade McIntosh of WSCU led both teams with 28 points.
Fort Lewis will begin the New Year on the road at Chadron State College on Friday, Jan.2
