Men’s Basketball Hold on to 84-80 Win over Mavericks; Skyhawks Fourth Seed in RMAC Tournament

DURANGO, Colo. – Led by junior center Alex Herrera's 22 points, four Fort Lewis College men's basketball players scored in double digits as the Skyhawks defeated Colorado Mesa University Saturday night, 84-80, in the final regular season game.
 
Herrera made 6-of-11 field goals, pulled down seven rebounds and blocked three shots against the Mavericks.  Seniors Nick Tomsick (13 points), Wes McKenzie (11 points), Mike Matthews (10 points), and Oscar Garcia (four points) played in their final regular season home game Saturday night.  Matthews totaled seven rebounds, four steals and three assists in 30 minutes of action.
 
The Skyhawks led by as many as 19 points with 12 minutes left in regulation.  Colorado Mesa took a one-point lead, 79-78 with only 38 seconds in the game.  A foul by CMU led to two free throws by Tomsick, followed by two more free throws by Mike Matthews to help seal the win, 84-80.
 
Fort Lewis out-rebounded Colorado Mesa, 40-28.  The Skyhawks shot 40 percent from the floor (22-55) but were bested by the Mavericks who netted 47.5 percent (29-61) from the floor and 46.7 percent from long range (7-15).
 
The Skyhawks finished the regular season 17-9 overall and 14-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  They earned the fourth seed in the RMAC post-season tournament and will host fifth seed CSU-Pueblo on Tuesday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Whalen Gymnasium.
