Jordan Doyle led the Fort Lewis College football team to a monumental 45-38 win Saturday night at Oklahoma Panhandle State University. The Skyhawks erased a 21-point second half deficit to record their first win of the season.
Fort Lewis was down early and quickly after Oklahoma Panhandle State put two scores on the board for a 14-0 lead just five minutes into the game.
Doyle rushed in the endzone from 17 yards out to cut the lead to 14-7. The Aggies added two more touchdowns in the first quarter for a commanding 28-7 lead after only 15 minutes of action.
Kipp Castanha brought the Skyhawks within 18 points after making a 27-yard field goal with 47 seconds left in the first half.
Trailing 28-10 to start the second half, Doyle ignited the Skyhawks fourth quarter comeback with two touchdown passes and two rushing scores. Down by 21 points early in the third quarter,
Kaulana Waalani-Arroyo intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for a score to cut the Aggies lead, 31-17.
FLC was forced to punt on their next drive which resulted in Doyle booting the ball 32 yards and pinning the Aggies on their two-yard line. The Skyhawks defense held OPSU from scoring for the third straight drive early in the fourth quarter.
Starting the fourth quarter drive on their own 32-yard line, Doyle completed a two-yard pass to
Amu Aukusitino followed by
PJ Hall's one yard run. The Skyhawks converted on third and seven when Doyle and
Nova Hardy connected for a 10-yard gain. After a seven yard sack, Doyle found
Andrew Johnson for a 62 yard touchdown pass. Castanaha's extra point kick brought the Skyhawks within one score, 31-24.
The Aggies were quick to respond on the ensuing drive with a one-play, 65-yard score to extend their lead to 38-24 with 9:43 left in regulation.
The Skyhawks capped off their next drive with a score after running eight plays for 70 yards. Doyle found
Austin Shaw,
Andrew Ike, Esley Simmons and Hardy for 53 passing yards, only to be capped off with a 17-yard quarterback scamper into the end zone.
Fort Lewis' defense held OPSU to three-and-out on the next drive. With 6:58 left in the game, FLC started their drive on their own 24 yard line. Two straight passes of 14 and 18 yards to Hardy and Johnson put the Skyhawks on OPSU's 44 yard line. The Skyhawks were pushed back eight yards after a sack before Simmons caught an 18-yard pass for a first down on the 33-yard line. Doyle found the end zone for the second straight time, this time running in from 33 yards out. The run and extra point knotted the game at 38 with 4:52 left in regulation.
Again, the Skyhawks defense held the Aggies to three-and-out and forced a punt that started the Skyhawks drive at 3:53 on their own 30-yard line. Doyle moved the ball five yards on a rush and then completed a seven yard pass to Aukusitino and a 20-yard pass to Shaw. After two incomplete passes, the Skyhawks took a 45-38 lead when Doyle found Simmons for a 38-yard score.
With 1:52 left in regulation,
Ryan Ross recorded a significant sack for a loss of eight yards. OPSU next two plays were incomplete passes. On fourth and 18, OPSU completed a 16 yard pass. Jake Foust and
Sione Folaumoeloa recorded the stop two-yards shy of a first down.
The Skyhawks finished their final drive with three rushes that burned the last 55 seconds of regulation.
Fort Lewis ran 79 plays for 435 yards and possessed the ball for more than 34 minutes. The Skyhawks notched 25 first downs and tallied 90 net yards rushing on 35 carries and 348 passing yards.
Doyle finished the game with a team high 85 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 17 carries. He completed 24-of-40 passes for 366 yards and two sacks. Doyle found nine different targets against the Aggies. Simmons caught five passes for 110 yards and one touchdown, along with Johnson's two catches for 80 yards and a score. Hardy posted a team high seven catches for 79 yards. Faust and Ross led the Skyhawks defense with seven tackles (three solo) each. Faust notched a tackle for a loss of six yards while Ross added three tackles for a loss of 15 yards and a sack for a loss of eight yards.
The Skyhawks will make their third straight road trip of the season next Saturday to Black Hills State University. The game will mark the Skyhawks Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener. Fans can listen to Mark Jastorff call the game on KIUP 930AM/97.3FM and on
