LAS VEGAS, N.M. –
Courtney Riley scored in the 70
th minute Sunday afternoon at New Mexico Highlands University to break the Fort Lewis College women's soccer scoring drought of 351 minutes. The goal was the game-winner for Fort Lewis as they defeated the Cowgirls, 1-0. The win also snapped a three game losing streak for FLC.
The win improved the Skyhawks record to 2-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
"It's always a battle here and I am so proud of how the girls answered the challenge," said Fort Lewis College head women's soccer coach
Jimmy Hall. "It is an intense environment and
Courtney Riley scored while hunting for rebounds. It was off of our third or fourth attempt in that offensive set."
The goal was Riley's second of the season. Both of her goals this season have been game-winning goals.
"It was a physical battle but we fought through and finally found a goal," said Riley. "We stuck together as a team and I couldn't be more proud to be a part of a family like this."
Fort Lewis was out-shot by the Cowgirls, 13-6 (6-4 shots on goal). Riley,
Brooke Milliet and
Jessica Singleton each posted two shot attempts to account for all of the Skyhawks shots.
Junior goalkeeper
Caitlyn Espinosa made six saves in goal to earn her first shutout of the season.
After four straight games away from home, the Skyhawks will return to Dirks Field with three straight home games. Fort Lewis will play host to Western State on Friday at 12:30 p.m., followed by CSU-Pueblo on Sunday at 12 p.m., and Adams State on the following Wednesday at 3 p.m.
