DURANGO, Colo. – January 10, 2015 – The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team won their fifth straight game Saturday night after defeating Western New Mexico University, 86-70, at Whalen Gymnasium.
The Skyhawks improve to 12-3 on the season and 7-2 in league games. They have won seven of their last eight games and are 6-1 this season in Whalen Gymnasium.
The loss moves Western New Mexico to 1-13 overall and 1-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Senior center
Alex Herrera led both teams with 28 points and three blocked shots. He made 10-of-15 field goals and 8-of-12 free throws to go with his eight rebounds.
Cade Kloster netted 12 points, seven of which came from the charity stripe, and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Austin Haldorson came off the bench to record his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Haldorson made 3-of-6 field goals and all four free throw attempts.
Junior guard
Kevin Flohr came off the bench and netted a season high six points. Flohr was 2-for-2 from long range. All six of
Will Morse's points came from downtown, Morse added two rebounds and dished out three assists.
Fort Lewis, which led for more than 38 minutes in the game, led by as many as 20 points in the second half. FLC netted 27-of-56 field goals for 48.2 percent and 23-of-31 from the free throw line (74.2 percent).
The Skyhawks edged the Mustangs offensively in the paint, scoring 28 points to WNMU's 26. FLC took advantage of 11 offensive rebounds to score 20 second chance points.
Fort Lewis will travel to Regis University and MSU Denver next weekend. Both games are slated to tip off at 7 p.m.
