DURANGO, Colo. – January 24, 2015 – One night after scoring the fewest points in a season (49 vs. Colorado Christian University), the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team stormed back to net 80 points in an 80-73 win over Colorado School of Mines Saturday night in Whalen Gymnasium. The 80 points were the second most points the Skyhawks have put on the scoreboard this season (81 vs. Northern New Mexico on Nov. 20, 2014).
The win improves the Skyhawks to 10-7 on the season and 7-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Colorado Mines drops to 9-10 overall and 4-8 in league games.
The Skyhawks made 9-of-10 free throws in the final 52 seconds of regulation. Leading 71-62 with 58 ticks left, the Orediggers fouled the Skyhawks six times but FLC pulled through to keep the lead in the final minute.
Kylie Santos went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the last 52 seconds and
Simone Ruedin made all four attempts to secure the Skyhawks win.
Santos scored a career high 16 points, with nine of them coming from long range where she made 3-of-8 attempts. She finished the game making 4-of-10 field goals and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. She also pulled down four rebounds and added an assist and steal.
Mary Brinton and
Skylyn Webb each tallied 12 points while
Kate Bayes came off the bench to post 15 points. Webb recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds to go with her 12 points. She also dished out three assists and stole the ball once. Brinton hit on 4-of-9 attempts from the floor to go with four rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot.
Fort Lewis finished the game making 24-of-62 field goals (38.7 percent), 6-of-19 three-point field goals (31.6 percent) and 26-of-29 free throws (89.7 percent). The 89.7 percent from the charity stripe is a season high for the Skyhawks.
The Skyhawks will play their next three games on the road, beginning next Saturday, Jan. 31 at Adams State University.
