ALAMOSA, Colo. – January 31, 2015 – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team committed 25 turnovers Saturday night in a three-point loss at Adams State University, 77-74. The loss was the Skyhawks first setback to the Grizzlies since 2011.
Fort Lewis evens their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record at 7-7 and move to 10-8 on the year. The win for ASU was only their third of the year (3-15, 3-11 RMAC).
"This is a really frustrating loss on the road for us," said Fort Lewis College head coach
Jason Flores. "It was a lost opportunity for us; we needed to win this one. Now we're scrambling with everyone else in a really bunched up conference. We played hard, we just didn't play well. We let them have too many opportunities to win the game. Defensively we lost some assignments. Give credit to them – they had some players who hit some big three's and gave them a lot of momentum in the game."
The Skyhawks trailed by seven, 68-61, with 4:23 left in regulation before
Kylie Santos made two three-pointer field goals and
Kaile Magazzeni and
Mary Brinton went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to go on a 10-0 run and take a 71-68 lead with 2:13 remaining.
The Grizzlies Lena Jaycox made two free throw shots to help ASU tie the game at 73-73. Emilie Klint grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup to give ASU a 75-73 they would not lose.
Kate Bayes netted 1-of-2 free throws to bring FLC within two points, 76-74, but the Skyhawks could not get any closer as they fell by 3, 77-74.
Erin Curry scored a career high seven points after making 3-of-5 field goals (1-for-1 from long range). Curry added three assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Brinton matched her season high of 22 points. Brinton made 7-of-13 field goals and 8-of-10 free throws to lead both teams in scoring. She also pulled down a game high 13 rebounds to match her career best.
Santos finished the game with 14 points, 12 of which came from long range where she made 4-of-10. Santos dished out a game high four assists and added three rebounds and two steals.
Magazzeni scored all 10 of her points in the second half.
The Skyhawks made 26-of-60 field goals for 43.3 percent and 15-of-18 free throws for 83.3 percent. They edged the Grizzlies on the boards, 35-32.
Fort Lewis will travel to Western New Mexico University and New Mexico Highlands University next Friday and Saturday.
