DURANGO, Colo. – January 24, 2015 – Eleven made three-point field goals and a nine rebound advantage helped the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to an 83-77 win over ninth-ranked Colorado School of Mines Saturday night in Whalen Gymnasium. Fort Lewis improves to 15-4 overall and 10-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss was only the Orediggers second of the season as they move to 15-2 overall and 11-2 in league games.
The Skyhawks trailed by two, 67-65, with 8:24 left in regulation by
Jared Smith made one of his four three-point field goals to boost the Skyhawks to a 68-67 lead they would not lose.
Alex Herrera scored the next four points to give FLC a five point lead but the Orediggers went on a 10-5 run to knot the game at 77-77 with 1:47 left in the game.
Rasmus Bach hit a field goal and Herrera added another jumper in the lane for an 81-77 lead. The Orediggers missed a layup with 15 seconds remaining and Herrera grabbed the rebound and was quickly fouled which led to two more free throws to seal the win, 83-77.
Herrera led the Skyhawks with 28 points and a game high 13 rebounds. He netted 10-of-18 field goals and 8-of-12 free throws. All four of Smith's field goals came from long range and he made both free attempts for 14 points. He added four assists and blocked one shot.
Cade Kloster netted 13 points, nine of which were from long range, and he added two steals.
Will Morse came off the bench to tab 10 points, three assists and three rebounds.
Austin Haldorson dished out a game high five assists and blocked a game high three shots.
The Skyhawks out-rebounded CSM, 36-27, and out-scored the Orediggers in the paint, 20-16. Fort Lewis finished the game making 47.5 percent from the floor (28-of-59), 45.8 percent from long range (11-of-24) and 16-of-21 free throws (76.2 percent).
Brian Muller led all scorers with 31 points. Muller made 6-of-10 from three-point range.
Fort Lewis will travel to Adams State University on Jan. 31.
