SILVER CITY, N.M. – February 6, 2015 – Junior guard
Kate Bayes scored a career high 25 points Friday night to lead the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team to a 70-55 win at Western New Mexico University. With the win and season sweep over the Mustangs, the Skyhawks improve to 11-8 overall and 8-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
"It was a really good game for us tonight," said head coach
Jason Flores. "We came in really focused and I felt good going into the game after a good week of practice after last week's disappointing loss. We regrouped in a great way and came together and had a great week of preparation. We played really well in this environment and had a double digit lead in the second half which is really half. Kate was able to pick her spot and we got her the ball where she was really effective. It's a great win for us."
Bayes made 7-of-15 field goals and 11-of-13 free throws. She scored 17 of her 25 points in the first half. Bayes finished the game with seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Junior forward
Mary Brinton netted 10 points, five rebounds and three blocks before fouling out of the game. She was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Skylyn Webb,
Kaile Magazzeni and
Kylie Santos each chipped in eight points. Webb made 4-of-6 field goals to go with her three assists and seven rebounds. Magazzeni was one rebound shy of a double-double and made 3-of-7 field goals and both free throw attempts. Santos tallied five rebounds and three assists to go with her eight points.
The Skyhawks made 46.2 percent from the floor (24-of-52) and 20-of-24 free throws for an 83.3 percent mark.
Fort Lewis out-rebounded the Mustangs by 10, 42-32. The Skyhawks out-scored WNMU in the paint (34-22), on the fast break (19-7), and the FLC's bench posted 36 points to the Mustangs 13.
Stephanie Moore led the Mustangs with 19 points.
Fort Lewis will play their third straight road game Saturday night at New Mexico Highlands University.
