DURANGO, Colo. – February 21, 2015 –
Missy Fundora scored five runs Saturday afternoon to help the Fort Lewis College softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Black Hills State University at Aspen Field. Saturday's win completed the weekend series sweep over the Yellow Jackets. The Skyhawks won game one, 7-5, and run-ruled BHSU in game two, 12-5 (five innings).
The Skyhawks improve to 6-9 overall and 4-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. BHSU drops to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in league games.
"We got off to a good start in the conference this weekend," said head coach
Kira Zeiter. "Four team wins is the way to begin the season. We will take this momentum into next weekend's games in New Mexico."
Fundora scored the first run of the game Saturday in the first inning. The leadoff batter, Fundora reached first after drawing a walk. She then stole second base and was batted in off of
Myndee Thompson double to right field.
The Skyhawks added three more runs in the fourth inning.
Jeovanna Rios started the inning with a single to center field before stealing second base. She reached third from
Denae Fisher's bunt. Rios scored on a passed ball and
Nikki Klepfer hit a sacrifice hit to drive in Fisher. Fundora added the third run of the inning with a home run, her second of the season.
The Skyhawks walked two batters in the fifth to cut the lead down to 4-2. FLC responded in the sixth inning with three more runs. Fundora hit a single to first base to bring home
Mandy Owens.
Adriana Rosthenhausler batted in
Kaitlyn Bending on a sacrifice hit, and Thompson singled to drive in Fundora for the Skyhawks final run of the game. BHSU tallied three runs in the top of the fifth on five hits.
Fundora finished the game with two hits, two runs batted in and three runs scored. Thompson added two hits and batted in two runs, and Fisher tallied two hits and scored one run.
Victoria Johnson improved to 4-3 on the year after pitching the first six innings and allowed two runs on four hits with one strikeout.
In the series finale, the Skyhawks crossed home plate six times in the first inning. Fundora scored the first run after a field error by BHSU. Rosthenhaulser scored the second run on another error and
Lauren Caldwell doubled up the middle to score
Myndee Thompson.
Tristen Gilbert hit her first career home run, a two run shot to left field. Fundora hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Fisher for run number six.
Black Hills State responded with four runs in the top of the second but Rios hit a double in the bottom of the second to score Caldwell and give FLC a 7-4 lead after two innings.
Fort Lewis sealed the win in the fifth inning after scoring five runs. Bending singled up the middle to score Rios before Rosthenhaulser hit in Bending. Thompson added two more runs when she doubled to left field to score Rosthenhausler and Fundora. With two outs and Thompson on second base, Caldwell, Gilbert and Rios drew three straight walks to bring in the walk off run.
Kiley Raica pitched the complete game and earned her second straight win after allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits.
Rosthenhausler, Caldwell and Rios each recorded two hits. Thompson drove in three runs, and Gilbert and Rios added two runs batted in.
Fort Lewis will travel to New Mexico Highlands University for pod play against the Cowgirls and Colorado Christian University Feb. 28-29.
