Box Score 2 SILVER CITY, N.M. – March 7, 2015 – The Fort Lewis College softball team took early leads in both games today at Western New Mexico University, but the Mustangs came back in both games to sweep the Skyhawks, 8-4 and 5-2.
"Today we had high points, and things we want to do differently tomorrow," said head coach Kira Zeiter. "It was the case of how a couple timely hits changes everything."The Skyhawks grabbed a 4-0 lead after two innings of action in game one. Jeovanna Rios added another run when she singled to center field to score
Myndee Thompson.
Fort Lewis tacked on two more runs in the second inning.
Missy Fundora doubled to centerfield to drive in
Nikki Klepfer. Thompson drove in the Skyhawks fourth run of the game when she hit a double to center field that brought in Rosthenhausler.
Western New Mexico scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the second. The Mustangs held the Skyhawks scoreless the remainder of the game and notched four straight home runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Leading 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Mustangs tied the game at 4-4 with a single home run shot before hitting in a grand slam to end the game, 8-4.
Rosthenhasuler went 4-for-4 with two runs scored. Thompson and Rios each went 3-for-4 at the plate, with Thompson scoring one run and driving one run in.
Victoria Johnson pitched the entire game, allowing eight runs on 13 hits and fanning two batters.
The Skyhawks stranded 11 runners in the game and the Mustangs left eight on base.
In game two, Fort Lewis struck first with one run in the opening inning. Rosthenhasuler hit a double to left center and then advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Lauren Caldwell drove her in off of a single to left field.
The Mustangs plated all five of their runs in the fourth inning. The first two batters of the inning drew outs before WNMU tallied five runs on five hits. Thompson drove in Fundora in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 5-2, but the WNMU quickly posted two outs on the Skyhawks to end the game.
Fundora tallied two hits and one run scored to lead the Skyhawks offense.
Kiley Raica pitched nearly the first four innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits.
Both teams will wrap up the four game series Sunday morning. The first game of the double header begins at 11 a.m.
