SILVER CITY, N.M. – February 6, 2015 – Solid shooting from the floor and an 18-rebound advantage led the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to a 26-point win at Western New Mexico University Friday night at Drag's Court, 88-62.
The win improves Fort Lewis' record to 16-5 overall and 11-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
"We shot the ball well and rebounded well," said associate head coach
Bob Pietrack. "Those two aspects are essential on the road."
The Skyhawks pulled down 40 rebounds (11 offensive) to the Mustangs 22. Fort Lewis shot 55.9 percent from the floor after netting 33-of-59 field goals. FLC started the game with a 51.4 field goal mark in the first half, only to improve in the second half and shoot 62.5 percent. They nailed 11-of-24 from behind the arc for 45.8 percent.
Alex Herrera recorded his 15
th double-double of the season with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Herrera, who had posted the double-double by halftime, added three blocks and two assists.
Cade Kloster added 18 points after making 5-of-8 field goals, 3-of-5 from three-point range and all five free throw attempts. Kloster also tied for team high honors with
Jared Smith with five assists each.
Rasmus Bach also made 5-of-8 field goals as part of his 12 points. He chipped in seven rebounds and four assists.
The Skyhawks dished out a season high 26 assists to the Mustangs 12. FLC held WNMU to 20 made field goals (seven second half field goals). The Skyhawks scored 38 points in the paint to the Mustangs 20, and tallied 18 points off of WNMU's 12 turnovers.
Fort Lewis led by as many as 30 points in the second half and never trailed the Mustangs.
The Skyhawks will play their third straight road game Saturday night at New Mexico Highlands University.
