LAS VEGAS, N.M. – February 7, 2015 – An 11-point second half advantage led the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to a 79-74 win Saturday night at New Mexico Highlands University in the John A. Wilson Complex.
"This was a true test for our team tonight," said associate head coach
Bob Pietrack. "It was a very difficult road trip, playing a talented team on the back end. We have our biggest home stand of the season coming up. We are excited to get home, get healthy and play at Whalen Gymnasium."
The Skyhawks, who led for the first 90 seconds of the game, trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and were down six at halftime, 38-32. They were held to nine field goals in the first half but made 11-of-15 free throws.
Trailing by 11 again in the second half, the Skyhawks went on an 18-7 run to knot the game at 54, which was capped by
Will Morse's layup. Fort Lewis would then out-score NMHU 14-6 over the next five minutes and lead by as many as eight, 68-60, with 6:14 left in regulation.
The Cowboys cut the Skyhawks lead down to two points, 70-68, but FLC would make all six free throw attempts to secure the win. Morse accounted for five of the Skyhawks final nine points.
Alex Herrera, who played all 40 minutes, finished with a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds. Herrera added four blocked shots, two assists and made 7-of-18 field goals and 5-of-8 free throws.
Morse came off the bench to score a career high 16 points. Twelve of his 16 came from three point range where he made 4-of-6.
Cade Kloster notched 15 points (3-of-7 three-point field goals), three assists and three rebounds and
Austin Haldorson tied a career high of 11 points to round out four Skyhawks scoring in double figures.
Fort Lewis made 23-of-55 field goals (41.8 percent), 9-of-21 three-point field goals (42.9 percent) and assists to the 24-of-33 free throws (72.7 percent).
The Skyhawks will play their next four games at home, beginning next Friday against Colorado State-Pueblo.
