LAS VEGAS, N.M. – February 7, 2015 –
Mary Brinton's layup 48 seconds into the Fort Lewis College women's basketball game at New Mexico Highlands University gave the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead they would not lose. Thirty-nine minutes later the Skyhawks would post a 70-52 win over the Cowgirls. Saturday's win also marked a season sweep for Fort Lewis over both New Mexico opponents.
"This was a good road win; we played really well and it was really nice to see two nights in a row with wins," said head coach
Jason Flores. "We played hard, we were focused and we took care of the ball, making us efficient overall. "We out-rebounded them and this has been our formula for success. This was a good team win, and a good bounce-back week for us heading into four games in a row at home against great teams in the conference. Mary was efficient scoring inside and overall moving the ball very well.
Skylyn Webb had good game with nine rebounds. We transitioned really well, and when these opportunities didn't exist, we took care of the ball."
Brinton finished the game shooting 70 percent from the floor after netting 7-of-10 field goals as part of her game high 18 points. Brinton added one assist, blocked one shot and pulled down three rebounds.
Kaile Magazzeni made all four free throw attempts and 5-of-15 field goals for 14 points. She grabbed eight rebounds, dished out two assists, blocked two shots and stole the ball once.
Skylyn Webb tied her career high of 13 points. She first set her career high of 13 points in the Skyhawks first meeting of the season with the Cowgirls on Jan. 9. Webb made 4-of-7 field goals and 5-of-9 free throws and recorded a team high nine rebounds.
The Skyhawks dominated in the paint, out-scoring New Mexico Highlands 42-24. They also out-rebounded NMHU by nine, 46-37.
For the third straight game, the Skyhawks shot better than 40 percent from the floor. FLC netted 41.9 percent for the game, netting 26-of-62 field goals. They held the Cowgirls to a 30 percent field goal mark (18-of-60) and 13.3 percent from behind the arc (2-of-15).
After a three-game road trip, the Skyhawks will return home to play their next four games at Whalen Gymnasium. The Skyhawks will play host to Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday and UCCS on Saturday. Both games will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
