Skyhawks Softball Suffers Two Home Losses

DURANGO, Colo. – March 22, 2015 – The Fort Lewis College softball team was held without a win on Sunday after falling to Regis University, 10-1 in five innings, and University of Colorado Colroado Springs, 7-2, in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod play action.  Combined with Saturday's two losses, this marks the first time this season the Skyhawks were swept at home.

"The team played hard this weekend," said head coach Kira Zeiter.  "Even though the games did not go our way, playing good competition will only make us better for the rest of the season.  We will see UCCS in a few weeks and most likely Regis in the conference tournament.  This weekend shows us what we want to work on the meantime."

In Sunday's opening game against the Rangers, Jeovanna Rios recorded a run batted in after hitting a single to second base that drove home Missy Fundora. The run cut the Rangers lead to 2-1, but the Skyhawks were held scoreless as RU plated eight more runs to run-rule FLC in five innings.

Fort Lewis was held to three hits against the Rangers with Fundora, Rios and Tristen Gilbert each recording a hit.

Victoria Johnson started the game in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits.  Olivia Goldberg pitched the next three innings, surrendering five runs on six hits before Kiley Raica closed the game pitching the final two-thirds inning allowing only one hit.

In the weekend finale game against UCCS, the Skyhawks went on the scoreboard first after tallying two runs in the bottom of the third inning. With Fundora and Denae Fisher on first and second, Kaitlyn Bending reached first base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error.  Fisher advanced to third base and scored on the throwing error for a 1-0 lead.  Fundora scored the second run of the game off of Rios' single to center field.

Tied 2-2 heading into the final inning, the Mountain Lions scored five runs on two hits to seal the win, 7-2.

Raica pitched the first 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and fanning six batters.  Johnson pitched one out, allowing three runs on two hits before Goldberg earned the last out of the inning on a strikeout.

Fort Lewis will travel to Adams State University March 28-29 for a four game series.
