GUNNISON, Colo. – December 10, 2016 – For the second time in four games, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team earned an overtime win. The Skyhawks defeated Western State Colorado University Saturday night, 107-103, at Paul Wright Gym in Gunnison, Colo. for their ninth straight win (9-1, 4-0 RMAC). The 107 points marks the fourth time this season FLC has eclipsed the 100-point mark. The Mountaineers 103 points are also the most points FLC has allowed in a game this season.
Tonight's win also caps a road sweep over Colorado Mesa University and the Mountaineers, marking the first road sweep by the Skyhawks over CMU and WSCU since the 2005-06 season.
"I'm just proud of a gutty road win by our team tonight," said head coach
Bob Pietrack. "We played a Western team that played excellent. They were well-prepared and just on fire from three-point land. We were able to survive the game which is just a testament to our team and our program's resilience. I'm really happy to get the road sweep and look forward to Tuesday."
The Skyhawks took a 55-49 lead into the lockerroom at halftime. After heading into overtime with both teams tied at 94, FLC outscored WSCU in the extra period, 13-9.
The second half featured a large run by both teams. FLC went on a 14-1 early in the half to grab an 80-66 lead with 8:50 left in regulation, followed immediately by Western State's 18-3 run as they took a one-point lead, 86-85, with 3:09 left in the game.
FLC was solid from the floor, making 33-of-64 field goals for 51.6 percent. The Skyhawks hit 14-of-34 three-point field goals (41.2 percent), but were bested by WSCU from long range who made 17-of-37 for 45.9 percent.
Rasmus Bach led four Skyhawks in double figures with 21 points. He posted his second double-double of the season after pulling down 11 rebounds. Bach accounted for seven of the Skyhawks 13 points in overtime. He made 2-of-3 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe while pulling down four rebounds.
Will Morse notched 18 points to go with a game high nine assists.
Joshua Blaylock made four three-pointers as part of his 17 points and
Brandon Wilson tallied 15 points and 10 caroms for his first double-double of the season.
WSCU's 28 personal fouls compared to FLC's 13 fouls led the Skyhawks to attempt 24 more free throws. Fort Lewis made 27-of-34 free throws while Western State made all but one of their nine attempts.
The Skyhawks will travel to Adams State University on Tuesday for their third straight road game. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
