Mavericks Edge Skyhawks in Closing Minutes

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – December 9, 2016 – Late baskets by Colorado Mesa University upended the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team by four points Friday night, 58-54, from Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Skyhawks held a 52-50 lead with 3:39 left in regulation before CMU took a 54-52 lead.  Kayla Herrera tied the game at 54-54 with 85 ticks left on the clock, but the Mavericks closed out the game scoring four unanswered points for the win.

"This is a tough pill to swallow, but the next step with this team is learning how to close out to a good team on the road, which is hard to do," said head coach Jason Flores.  "We had to fight through some adversity in the fourth quarter, but we're close to being a real good team.  I know these players and we'll get there."

FLC moves to 5-2 on the season and 1-2 in league games.  The Mavericks improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the RMAC.

Shelby Patterson scored a team high 11 points and added two steals.  Herrera recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  She added two assists and two steals.  Briana Clah rounded out the Skyhawks in double figures with 10 points.

Natalie Stilwell blocked five shots, one more than the Mavericks team.

FLC finished the game making 31.7 percent from the floor (20-of-63), 28.6 percent from long range (4-of-14) and 62.5 percent from the charity stripe (10-of-16).

The game featured seven ties and six lead changes.  The Skyhawks largest lead of the game was eight points, and FLC led the game for nearly 25 minutes.
