CANYON, Texas – February 14, 2016 – The Fort Lewis College softball team dropped two decisions Sunday in the final day of the West Texas A&M University Lady Buffs Invitational in Canyon, Texas. The Skyhawks fell in the morning game to Angelo State University, 13-2 (five innings) before going extra innings to Lubbock Christian University (L, 7-6 in eight innings).
In the opening game of the day,
Missy Fundora cut ASU's lead down to 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Fundora reached base on a walk and then proceeded to steal second. She reached third on a sacrifice bunt by
Adriana Rosthenhausler and then scored on a wild pitch.
Angelo State added one run in the fourth inning but scored seven runs on four hits, one of which was a grand slam, in the top of the fifth inning to take a 13-1 lead.
Mandy Owens singled to center field in the bottom of the fifth that scored Rosthenhausler to close out the game, 13-2.
Denae Fisher accounted for two of the Skyhawks five hits against Angelo State. ASU finished with 13 runs on 14 hits and 11 runs batted in.
The Skyhawks played their first extra-inning game of the season today against LCU.
The Chaps scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning but FLC answered in the second inning with two runs. Fisher hit a single to right center that scored Owens and
Lauren Caldwell.
LCU regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning, 3-2. The Skyhawks tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning after
Angelique Elemen singled to score Fundora.
The Chaps took the lead for the third time in the game when they added two more runs off of a home run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning. Again, FLC responded to tie the game, 5-5 in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs in the sixth inning, Fundora hit a single that resulted in two errors by LCU to score
Robyn Young and Fisher.
The game went to extra innings after a scoreless seventh inning. Owens started the eighth inning on second base (international tiebreaker) and scored after Fisher hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
A single by LCU in the bottom of the eighth inning led to the LCU win, 7-6.
Victoria Johnson pitched the complete game in the circle, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits.
Fundora, Caldwell and Fisher each tallied two hits. Fisher finished the game going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and one run scored.
The Skyhawks will open their home season Feb. 20-21 against Colorado Mesa University.
