AZTEC, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College softball team opened their home season and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season Saturday afternoon against Colorado Mesa University. The Skyhawks lost both games to the Mavericks, 12-0 (five innings) and 8-4. Due to field conditions at the Skyhawks home field – Aspen Field – the games were played at the Aztec Sports Complex in Aztec, N.M.
The Mavericks notched 12 hits and drew nine walks in the opening game. FLC was held to five hits against the Mavericks.
Adriana Rosthenhausler accounted for two of the Skyhawks hits.
Victoria Johnson pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits.
FLC stranded nine batters on base, including bases loaded in the first and fifth innings.
In the second game, the Skyhawks scored four runs on 12 hits. Trailing 4-0 in the fifth inning with two outs,
Robyn Young hit her first career home run to cut CMU's lead down to 4-2.
The Mavericks added two more runs in the sixth inning to take a four run lead.
Angelique Elemen hit a single to center field and advanced to second base while driving home
Missy Fundora and
Gianna Melaragno to get the Skyhawks within two runs of the Mavericks, 6-4.
CMU hit a two run home run shot in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win, 8-4.
Both teams will face off against each other in another doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch will go out at 11 a.m.
