Softball Drops Two to Mavericks

AZTEC, N.M. – February 21, 2016 – Colorado Mesa University completed the four game sweep over Fort Lewis College Sunday afternoon at the Aztec Sports Complex in Aztec N.M. The Skyhawks fell to the Mavericks in game one, 14-5, and 21-11 in game two.  FLC was run ruled in five innings in both games.
 
In Sunday's opening game, CMU grabbed a 13-0 lead in the first four innings before FLC responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.   Denae Fisher hit a single to shortstop to drive home Adriana Rosthenhausler, followed by Angelique Elemen's run. With the bases loaded, Gianna Melaragno drew a walk that brought home Fisher, followed by Missy Fundora's walk that scored Lauren Caldwell for the Skyhawks four runs. 
 
CMU hit a home run in the top of the seventh inning to bring their lead to 14-4.  With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Mandy Owens singled to center field to score Elemen for the final run of the game.
 
FLC finished the game with six hits and six walks.  The Skyhawks committed four errors and left seven on base.  CMU accounted for 14 runs on 13 hits.
 
In game two, the Skyhawks took their first lead of the weekend in the first inning, 4-3.  Elemen hit a two run shot to score Fundora, who had reached base on an error.  Tristen Gilbert drew a walk and scored on the next batter, Fisher, who hit a two run homerun that gave FLC a 4-3 lead.
 
CMU regained the lead in the following inning with four runs, and then plated eight more in the third to take a 15-4 lead. 
 
In the bottom of the third inning with no outs and the bases loaded, Fisher drew a walk to score Rosthenhausler.  Two batters later with the bases loaded again, Caldwell reached first base on a walk that scored the Skyhawks second run of the inning (Gilbert).
 
Trailing 15-6 in the fourth inning, FLC scored four runs to cut the lead to 15-10.  Elemen reached base on an error that scored Fundora before Robyn Young nailed a three-run homerun.
 
The Mavericks charted six runs in the top of the fifth inning.  FLC scored their 11th run of the game in the bottom of the fifth but fell short, 21-11.

Elemen finished the day with five hits, four runs scored and three runs batted in. Fisher added two hits, three runs scored and four runs batted in.
 
FLC scored 11 runs on eight hits and drew eight walks.  The Skyhawks committed eight errors and left seven on base.  CMU accounted for 14 hits and five walks.
 
The Skyhawks will play host to No. 2 Dixie State University Monday morning.  The doubleheader will begin at 10 a.m.
