Mountain Lions Take Two From Skyhawks

Elemen hits two home runs in Game 2

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – February 27, 2016 – The Fort Lewis College softball team travelled to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon for a conference doubleheader. The Skyhawks lost both games, 9-1 (five innings), and 6-5 (nine innings).
 
The losses move the Skyhawks to 3-16 overall and 0-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
FLC surrendered five home runs in the opening game. The Skyhawks lone run came in the top of the fifth inning when Lauren Caldwell batted home Denae FisherAdriana Rosthenhausler, Fisher and Caldwell each recorded one hit for the Skyhawks.  UCCS accounted for 11 hits on 25 at bats.
 
In game two, Angelique Elemen hit a home run to right field to give FLC a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  UCCS plated one run each in the first three innings to take a 3-1 lead. 
 
Elemen struck again with another home run in the top of the fourth inning for her fifth home run of the season and first multi-home run game.
 
Trailing 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning, the Skyhawks scored two runs to send the game into extra innings.  Tristen Gilbert grounded out to second base but drove home Missy Fundora, followed by Fisher's single to right field that scored Rosthenhausler who tied the game at 4-4.
 
Mandy Owens hit her first homerun of the season in the top of the eighth for a 5-4 lead but UCCS knotted the game in the eighth inning.  FLC was held scoreless in the ninth inning.
 
In the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs and runners on the corners, UCCS hit a single for the game winning run.
 
Victoria Johnson pitched the complete game, surrendering 16 hits and fanning 11 batters. 
 
Fisher tallied three hits while Fundora, Rosthenhausler and Elemen each hit two as part of the Skyhawks 13 hits.
 
Both teams will face each other again Sunday morning.  First pitch of the doubleheader goes out at 11 a.m.
